[Abastor] & Nick Landing - BC Yearling Prep
Nick led the black colt from the barn and led him to the mounting block. Fully tacked and geared up, Abastor stood alert and ready. He knew what all this hullabaloo was about. The quicker Nick got his seat the quicker he could get to the track.
Abastor was on the verge of his 2yo birthday. He was a beautiful slender and lanky colt, but had the nice long straight legs. Already he was showing slight muscling on his legs. It was a good indicator of what more could be developed as he matured with age and experience.
Nick admired the colt. He was so full of life. Aba shifted albeit restlessly and chomped on his bit. Nick chuckled as he gathered himself and collected the reins. Nick looked up suddenly as heard a sound of an approaching horse and rider.
Adele was all smiles astride The Innocent Skier. Adele where are you and Inn headed?
Abastor pranced practically as he nickered excitedly with the approach of the four year old bay stallion. His eyes flashed with fire. As soon as he was tacked in his gear, Abastor saw every horse as competition...and he was willing to take them all on...no matter how big, old or experienced.
Easy Aba.. Nick cooed to the green colt. Adele rubbed Inn's neck as she replied. Inn gave the younger colt a bit of a hard eye as though irritated but the colt's cockiness.
We are headed to the track, gotta keep Inn fit for Y12! Nick beamed this was a great opportunity to work on the young colt's racing behaviors! Hey, Aba and I are going to tag along. He needs to work on his "manners"
Adele smiled and noded her consent, she wasn't about to tell her boss no..
So Nick clucked to the black colt and like a flash he was off clearly eager to arrive at the track. Inn and Adele were right on their heels as they entered the turf track, pulling then right up alongside them.
Aba's ears went back slightly as Inn drew close, but Nick quickly corrected the black and he responded begrudgingly. Good boy.. Nick rewarded the colt for the obedient behavior, but he still didn't like the idea of Inn getting ahead of him.
He is very competitive Nick...That will come in hand on the tracks. Nick nodded his agreement as the duo approached the starting gates.
Aba's ears suddenly flicked forward as he forgot all about the four year old stallion. Right now in his world all he saw was the gate. His gait became more animated as they drew nearer, like a show pony for the circus, Aba was parading himself up to the gate slots.
Adele was fairly gigling at the young colt's show...My he is so lively!! Nick laughed, You haven't even seen him run yet!
Nick and Aba appraoched their slot and he eagerly went in. The Innocent Skier and Adele loaded right beside them.
Adele, I'm just going to let him break and circle him back, but you and Inn go ahead and do your full workout...don't wait for us.
Adele smiled and nodded her understanding. No problem!
The two horses waited in the gates. Abastor had tunnel vision. All he saw now was the track beyond...his body itched to crash forward, but held himself in check...he must wait...wait for the GATE!
The gates flung open and both horses broke like lightening. Aba was running a neck behind the four year old and suddenly he found his stride, but wait....what was this??
Nick was slowing the Abastor down, he fought for his head as Adele and Inn grew farther and farther away. He fought hard, but eventually saw that resistance was futile. He huffed his exasperation at the stallion's escape, but followed Nick's bidding as he asked him for a slow cooling trot...
Easy boy...don't worry...race day is right around the corner. For his good behavior, Nick allowed the colt to have a little bit more of his head and they cantered lightly. Abastor forgot about the stallion and his frustration because now he was running...as long as he was running everything was good...
Yes it was good.
