Partyatthedisco & Talia Smith
Carter stood to the side as he watched Talia saddle the most recent ship in, a massive dark bay filly from KC Racing by the name of Partyatthedisco. BB did not want to stand still for Talia as she struggled to get the girth done up, only to be met by the angry ears of BB. Acquiring the filly was a surprise to the Firestone staff when Carter had driven the trailer down the driveway. Firestone was supposed to be picking up a filly from Battle Brook Stables, but when he found out the filly was already privately sold, KC Racing had offered the grade four filly to Carter hoping that they could get some more experience into her. The good thing was that because their Classic string was so small, Carter could afford to put one more horse into their string.
“You know, I think this gal is the biggest horse in all of our string this year,” Carter spoke suddenly, making BB’s ears perk up at the sound of his voice. Her 2-year-old season wasn’t bad by any means – she had some solid placings and truthfully really fit into the Y14 crop. Her 3-year-old season wasn’t off to a bad start either, it was just Carter’s job to introduce her properly to some HoTY competition.
BB perked her head up, suddenly awaking as Talia jumped up and mounted the monster filly. It was quite amusing to watch Talia sit atop the filly who was pushing 17.3hh. BB didn’t know what to think about the change in riders, but once they stepped onto the track BB settled down and away they went at a trot. The filly trotted up and down the stretch for a minute before Talia let her move up into a slow canter. BB’s head bounced up and down and her body fluidly followed the motion. Talia patted her neck and kissed to her once they reached their starting point. "Time to go," she whispered to the filly. BB steadily inclined into a slow gallop. Carter stood by the outside rail of the track and clicked his timer to start.
BB galloped slowly, finding her stride for about the first half of the workout. Underneath of Talia, it felt like they were crawling at the gallop and she asked the bay filly to pick up the pace a little bit. Slowly but surely BB’s pace increased furlong by furlong. As they started to come to the end of the furlong, Talia asked BB to give her fastest pace. When Talia loosened her grip on the reins, BB really responded with a great surge forward. Her long, dainty legs travelled forwards as they passed under the wire. Talia shook her head, thinking that their pace was too slow and BB didn’t really respond until she saw Carter’s face as they stopped in front of him.
“That felt way too slow… why are you smiling?” Talia said, trying to catch her breath after the run.
“Talia…that was wicked fast. I think we’ve got ourselves a diamond in the rough here,” Talia patted the filly’s damp neck as they walked back to the barns.
