It is always an exciting moment when a new stable opens it's doors, and Sunset Acres is no different. Owned and run by trainer Ryan Johnstone - a former jockey - the staff aren't expecting huge things straight away although are optimistic as they prepare to see their colors on the track in the coming weeks.
Ryan has certainly wasted no time before starting to forge some local connections and agreed to speak to us at the rural retreat earlier today.
"Thank you for coming today. I am sure that you are very busy covering the larger and established stables in the area."
I assure you, we are always interested in a new story and yours is no different. Can you tell us a little about your stable?
"Certainly. As you know we are a very new operation, I retired from the saddle myself last year and was looking for a new challenge. My family are an equestrian one, and to me this seemed the next logical step. Of course, such things don't happen on a whim and it took a little time to secure decent premises, as well as find staff that I am happy to work with. Alongside me, you might speak to my head lad Jason or of course our jokey Brian - he's only an apprentice but I am sure he has talent."
Interesting. We hear you have been talking to other stables?
"You heard correctly. We really wanted to get our name out there as soon as possible so we put an advert out about looking for some horses either to buy or for lease. While we haven't found any sales at this stage we have some pretty exciting leases. Dancer's Shadow and Shuttershock will be starting in our colors only next week while we hope to have Jericho on the ground for us shortly. We also secured a lease on a yearling for next season, who will be joining our own as juveniles next season."
Nice. Do you have any plans for the future that we could get out of you?
"I'd like to see how things go, although seeing Jericho make it to Grade One before the season is out would be amazing. He's been in fine form this season, and we hope to build on that."
Thank you for your time today, Ryan. We wish you every success in your endeavours.
So there you have it, look out for Sunset Acres from November Week 2!
