The question has surfaced from time to time - what has Valkyrie been doing with Sugar Rush? Acquired from the Star Thoroughbreds dispersal along with three-year-old filly Fantasy Island, information on the four-year-old mare has been less than forthcoming, though not because of secrecy. When asked for a statement, trainer Cole Mavecci was quite willing to talk about the sprinter's future.
When asked why she hasn't been racing since being acquired, he had laughed. "Have you every seen a mare that's been laid-up for six months? By the time we got her, she was in no shape to race competitively. Now, Fantasy Island, she'd been racing even if it was lightly this year. Plus she's younger, so it didn't take as much to get her back. Sugar was halfway to being broodmare-ready when we got her, so we needed to turn that all around. It can be done, but it takes time. She'll be back and ready to race in Year Seventeen, and will likely race at six as well."
