A Sad Day for KC Racing
With the fall season nearly upon us, many stables are gearing up for some of the biggest races of the year and prepping their best horses for their competition. KC Racing was no different, and while they may not be participating in any of the most famous races, the stable will be entering two of their 3 year olds in the distance series over at Battlestone Down. Sylvanite, who placed third in a leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, will be running on the turf distance while Muggathugga, winner of this year's Tonalist Stakes, will make his true HOTY debut in the dirt distance series and will be directed towards the final leg of the distance series later this year which will be ran on sand.
Plenty of good news has came out of last month for KC Racing such as Muggathugga, Sylvanite and A True Hero gaining G3 status with high hopes of achieving G1 at the end of their fourth year next season. The purchase of two 4 year old G3 mares, Dark Maiden and Silent Heart had been nothing short of good news as both of the older fillies have superb personalities and great race records going into their fifth year. Alas it was not all happiness and things to be celebrated for the slowly blossoming stable as a death one of their horses brings everything to a rolling halt.
Kimberly Kenny, owner of KC Racing, was unable to comment as the horse that was lost was the younger full sister to KCRS favorite and founding colt, Muggathugga. The filly, Smooth Criminal, was a 2 year old dirt runner who shared many of the same characteristics as her older brother. The filly had been found by a matter of chance in less than applicable conditions in a couple of states over where she was eventually rescued by owner, Kimberly Kenny. We spoke with the head veternarian at KC Racing, Trisha, on what happened. "Ciri, that's what we called her around here, was actually on a year long break from racing, there had been plans to reintroduce her to the track in the spring of Year Seventeen. She's slow to mature, much like her brother and it was in her best interest to let her sit the rest of this year. She was such a sweet-tempered filly and honestly, it was the result of a pasture accident that forced the decision to euthanize her. It wasn't a result of negligence in this case, more so the result of a rowdy Rise Me Gold playing too roughly with her pasture mates." The head trainer, John Murchison, concluded with the fact that there had been a lot of plans for the filly come next year such as finally breaking her maiden and giving her a headstart in HOTY races.
Smooth Criminal had placed in all of her three starts, earning $21,000.
