BSD OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES NEW 3YO SERIES

Battlestone Downs is proud to announce three new three-year-old series coming the second half of the season: the Turf Distance Series, the Dirt Distance Series, and the Canadian Triple Tiara.

The Canadian Triple Tiara will run the same weeks as the Canadian Triple Crown, and consists of the nine furlong Woodbine Oaks on dirt (June Wk 4), the eight and a half furlong Bison City Stakes on dirt (July Wk 2), and the ten furlong Wonder Where Stakes on turf (August Wk 1). As with the CTC, winners of a Triple Crown or Triple Tiara race will not be eligible to run in the Canadian Triple Tiara.

The Turf and Dirt Distance Series will run on opposite weeks, culminating in a race on sand for the winners of the earlier races. The Turf series consists of the ten furlong Virginia Derby (September Wk 4), the ten and a half furlong California Derby (October Wk 2), and the eleven furlong Maryland Derby (November Wk 2). The Dirt series consists of the ten furlong Pennsylvania Derby (October Wk 1), the ten and a half furlong Oklahoma Derby (Oct Wk 3), and the eleven furlong Ohio Derby (November Wk 2). The final leg of both series is the twelve furlong Super Derby on November Wk 4.

The Distance series will be open to winners of other series.

We are awfully excited to see a formal announcement for the the distance series. We're eager to point Fire It Up for the turf series and test his mettle against the best runners. Our dirt entry is not quite set in stone and is pending the results of the Triple Crown and Tiaras. I did have a question about the requirements for the long distance series. Are any horses allowed to run in the distance series or only non-winners of the Triple Crowns and Triple Tiaras?

I was not aware of the Canadian Triple Tiara, but now... now I may just have to come up with a candidate and future foal slots for this new race series!

The CTT was a new inspiration we felt would be lucrative, given the level of competition of late and out of fairness to our great racing fillies.

After some thought on the subject, the distance series will be open to winners of the other series, for a few reasons. One is that after eliminating horses from all other series, that could leave a very limited pool of entrants some years, if they even decide to enter. Second, since it's later in the season, some of the top horses from other series may be going on to compete against the older horses anyway. Third, with the way these things tend to go as far as judging, I think newcomers will have a very good shot against the earlier winners.

However, there will of course be reflection after the current year if we feel we need to make changes!
