By the time KC Racing's homebred colt, Muggathugga had turned two years of age and made his first debut on the track, his yearling full sister had already been sold to another owner. KC Racing's owner had simply wanted to put all of her focus into Muggathugga for the time being and it did a great deal with the colt for he is now maturing nicely as a three year old, having both broke his maiden this year as well as moving into G4 races with G3 lying close behind on the horizon. The colt has placed in the top three in all of the races he's entered giving him a full 100% consistency. It almost comes as a regret that KCRS sold the colt's only full sibling. [break][break]
However, as luck would have it, the colt's sister (now a 2 year old juvenile) had found herself in bad living conditions as her new owners simply wanted to collect all the racing breeding stock that they could and try to sell the foals to others, caring very little for the horse's well being. All it took was a call for someone to come out and bring the red filly to her true home. While there, however, trainer John Murchison noticed something interesting in a towering dark bay 2 year old filly that had been covered with muck and grime at the time. With the trainer's eye for good horses, KCRS decided to bring the filly home as well while the others horses were taken by the authorities.
[break][break]
As it would turn out, the towering dark bay filly was a full sister to Mardi Gras, the now retired G3 mare whose career ended shortly after a breakdown in one of the seasonal cups. The fillies were soon given names Smooth Criminal for Muggathugga's sister, and PartyAtTheDisco for Mardi Gras' sister. Both of the fillies would receive the best of care from both the staff and the resident veterinarian and if the fillies appeared to be in good shape for racing and had the heart for it, they'd follow in the hoofsteps of their siblings.
[break][break]
Roughly three months later, now in the last week of April, it was time to see if these fillies loved the thrill of the sport of kings as much as their siblings. Smooth Criminal, at first glance, looked nothing like her brother. She was a bright red chestnut and was smaller than most of the other horses at the stable standing only at fifteen hands. "Cri" as she would come to be called was curious about her jockey, Ralph Kipp and preceded to nibble at his face before he was giving a foot up into the saddle. Before she had left KCRS as a yearling, she had been introduced into loading into the gate which came as a plus now because the filly loaded easily in the gate and was rather quiet before the makeshift buzzer sounded.[break][break]
Smooth Criminal had bunched herself up like a coil in the starting gate before bursting out of the gate before leveling off her speed on her own and flowing with her own internal racing rhythm. According to John Murchison, the filly ran much like her brother and waited for her own moment to strike as she pounded the dirt track with her dainty hooves. About 3/4 of the way down the track and rapidly approaching the stretch, the filly stretched her legs out and lengthened her stride covering as much ground as possible before nosing through the finish line as a result. Kipp pulled the filly up and the filly fought the bit not wanting to slow down before finally settling into a prancing state as she was ponied off the track.
[break][break]
PartyAtTheDisco would be a bit different. 'I know you were happy to get A True Hero after Mardi Gras retired, but we've got her full sister here to keep you busy as well." Trainer John Murchison informed McKinney as he was introduced to the towering dark bay filly. The jockey found himself gaping at the filly who was taller than her older sister. A whistle of awe came from the jockey as a result, "She's much bigger than Mardi. Maybe 'bout 17.2? 17.3? She's got way more energy too, man this a lot of horse." "BB" had become the filly's nickname, given by McKinney himself which apparently stood for Big & Beautiful.
[break][break]
The big filly danced over to the starting gates and bawked at the idea of going into one of them before finally allowing herself to be coaxed into one of the 'vile metal contraptions'. Once the gates closed behind her the filly rammed her frame towards one side before having her head steadied by the handlers who stood by on the railings. The buzzer sounded and the filly broke out of the gates like a wild animal that had been pent up for much too long. McKinney had to pull the filly back to which she responded by fighting at the bit before finally settling into a leisurely pace. From the jockey's perspective he felt as though they were getting nowhere fast, but trainer John Murchison later said that the filly was moving like a machine and was covering a lot of ground at that stride. When the stretch was visible towards the last bend, the filly shifted her gears into overdrive and showed the full extent of her stride as she hustled towards the finish line, tearing up the turf as she went. Upon crossing the finish line, the filly kicked up her heels abruptly in excitement which almost unseated her jockey. "Show off." The jockey chuckled as the filly was ponied off the track, nickering and snorting loudly.
