[attr="class","afir4"]She snored lightly in some corner of the barn, hoping to catch a few winks before her next ride. Jaime came storming through the barn, looking for a very tardy willowy blonde. Doors slammed and horses pinned their ears in protest, but Adele slumbered on unaware with one of the barn cats curled in her lap. She woke up to hissing and sharp claws, causing her to yelp and swear. DAMMIT you damn cat!, she grumbled in protest and pried the feline off of her lap as she stood to see what had caused the furball to so rudely awaken her and then she had that sinking feeling. She had forgotten something. She checked her watch and swore again. She turned to jog out of the barn only to bump into a muscled wall of masculine proportions. Shit. She craned her head up to see the face attached to the body and she wanted to sink into the floor and disappear.Damn Irish men and their stubbornness and mean glares.
"Taking a cat nap I see?," the towering Irish trainer asked with a blank expression on his face. Adele decided no use in hiding it and flashed him her most brilliant smile. He snorted. "Hurry up. Fin is tacked and waiting for you." He turned and left walking outside into the cold air towards the track where Fin waited with Katia petting the stallion's head. Adele braced herself for the cold as she zipped up her protective vest over her layers. She grabbed her helmet and gathered her courage as she stepped out into the chilly March morning air. It was still considered winter and the mornings were still cold. Jaime was a cold hearted bastard making them work on the outdoor dirt track this morning, but he'd said something about Fin being on edge and needing the extra push of battling elements...or some kind of shit like that.
The cold air hit her hard, stealing her breath away for a moment, but she pressed on and hurried over to the track, buckling her helmet on as she went. She felt so tired today. She never got sick, but when she did it hit her hard. Her throat was on fire, nose running as she wiped it with the back of her hand as she made it to the track and approached an oddly anxious looking Ultimate Revenge. She had a sudden feeling she should have listened to Malcolm and stayed at home today, but she was much to stubborn for that. There was work to be done, horses to be conditioned and exercised. The Crown preps were right around the corner and she wanted to make sure she was doing her part to make it a successful campaign this year for IRS. Hence, her current condition with a wary feeling and a horse who normally is never rattled, looking a little crazy eyed with a cold to boot. Oh well. The show must go on. She was a professional and Fin was her horse, well not legally, but for all intents and purposes....
Katia gave Adele a wry smile as she kept Fin in place. He was like a dancing live wire. His eyes were white rimmed, even as Katia attempted to soothe the black bay athlete. Adele wrinkled her nose in concern and approached the behemoth. He was her boy and there was usually a sense of trust between them, but the colt pinned his ears at the woman's approach. Adele snorted and slapped the colt's neck. "None of that handsome boy. Easy..." She looked to Katia, who had a look of bewilderment on her face. "I don't know what's wrong with him. He's been anxious all day and didn't touch his feed this morning. I had Graham check him over....but we don't see anything wrong with him..." Adele nodded and took the reins from the groom and proceeded to look over Fin. His ears were still pinned, but he stilled and allowed Adele to run her hands over him. She shook her head frustrated, but waived Katia over to give her a leg up. She was one of the three strongest riders here at IRS and Fin was hers, she just mentally abbraided herself that today was just going to be one of those days. She soared into the air and then was settled in perfectly on the stallion's back. He danced sideways as she settled.
Jaime watched from the rail with an intense and focused gaze. Nick was out for the day, scoping out one of the Keenland sales and so he'd obliged the boss and picked up the trainings for the senior string. That included Fin. Jaime had seen the stallion work and perform. He was normally unflappable, unphased by anything or anyone, but this cantankerous horse he saw now was not the normal. He had a gnawing feeling, but watched as Adele began to put the horse through his paces. He trusted Adele. She was a professional and he had to trust that she could do her job, at least that's what he told himself. To be honest....he felt protective of his cousin's wife. Sure they might not get along, but family was family, that plus he really didn't want to have Malcolm coming down and trying to beat his ass because his wife got hurt on his watch.
Adele wrangled Fin in as they galloped for a mile, all the while she was feeling him out. Fin was a stoic kind of horse. He had moments of fire, but he was never as on the muscle as he was this morning. Usually he settle in, but he was still feeling off. This wasn't right. She was just about to radio over to Jaime to cancel the rest of the workout when Des, Nick's Bernese Mountain dog, barked right at the pole from the outside rail and chased one of the barn cats. Normally bomb proof, Adele didn't even see it coming as Fin mid-stride, bolted and bucked. It was like the perfect storm.
Jaime watched in horror as Ultimate Revenge tossed Adele into the air like she was a rag doll and tore down the track. He didn't give a damn about the horse in that moment. He knew the outriders would wrangle him up. He radioed for Liam Graham to get to the dirt track ASAP. Having an on-site vet paid off. Fin was wrangled up and Liam was looking him over. He danced in place and didn't look worse for the wear besides looking crazed. He had run over to Adele, making a wise crack about the stallion and when he didn't hear a sarcastic reply. That's when he felt himself panic.
She had seen it all in slow motion and yet it seemed like there was nothing to do to stop what was happening from happening. She could only say shit as her body went flying through the air. He'd bucked her off and falling sideways. She saw the white rail approaching and grimaced this was going to hurt like hell. She felt the impact and heard it with a resounding crack as she hit the rail on her side and then her head on the way down to the ground and then things took on a still-like quality. She heard Jamie make a sarcastic comment and found, she couldn't talk....hell, wait a minute...she couldn't breathe.
It was the most horriffic sound he'd heard in his entire life. The sound of someone choking on their own blood. "Shit....no no no. Look at me Addie." He was instantly on the ground holding her hand and calling 9-1-1. "GRAHAM GET OVER HERE NOW!" He yelled for the vet and was unzipping Adele's protective vest. Her panicked blue eyes were locked onto his. He felt hopeless. How could this have gone all so wrong? "Stay with me Addie, stay awake!" Liam was there in the next instant. "She broke a rib...piericed her lung. It's collapsed. Back up." He quickly dove into his utensil bag. He whipped out a 20 gauge syringe needle and inserted it into the left side between the rib and lung. Adele looked on face turning blue with lack of oxygen. He pulled the syringe back and the excess oxygen filled the syringe, leaving room for her lung to expand. "Did you call for the ambulance?" He asked, focused on Adele. Jaime nodded. Sirens blared as the ambulance showed up. The team worked quickly and got her loaded into the ambulance with Liam telling them everything he could. Jaime watched frozen with shock as the ambulance drove off. Liam walked back and stood in front of Jaime. "She's going to be okay Jaime. But you're going to need to call her husband. He needs to know. Don't worry about things here. Fin is fine. Ethan and I can run things here. Go to the hospital and be with her. I'll call Nick too."
Jaime nodded and was off running. He slid into his truck and dialed Nick. It was a short conversation. He reassured him that Liam and Marino were handling things and that for the time had to be enough. He hung up and took a deep breath and the dialed Malcolm's number. He was almost wishing it would go to voicemail...."Hey Mal, It's Jaime. There's been an accident. Adele is headed to the hospital. I'm right behind her. She's going to be okay, but figured you needed to know..." Shit. He was making a no dog rule at the tracks. He hung up and drove like a bat out of hell to the hospital.
