The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Sprint: 6 furlongs - Turf - 2YO

The horses are about to load into the gate. Race time favorite is Faded Dreams on the far outside. She is a daughter of Speed Demon, who as everyone knows has been a very potent sire over the last five years. Faded Dreams is the only horse in the field with two wins on her record. Like the rest of the fillies in the field, she last raced two weeks ago. Surprisingly, there were no males scheduled to sign up for The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Sprint. This race is set to run over 6 furlongs on the turf.

They’re loading into the gate. Spirit Of The Angel loads into the inside stall. The chestnut filly broke her maiden in February Week One and was raced consistently throughout the month of February. She is looking to rebound off of a fourth place finish in the Stride of Perfection Handicap. She loads in nicely for the starters and stands willingly.

Moonstorm, a daughter of Canjun Moon and Terror Smile, wears towel number three, but she will break from gate two with the scratch of Battle Brook Stable’s Game Over. Moonstorm was bred by Firestone Racing and Battle Brook and she has been a precocious runner for her freshman sire. Moonstorm broke her maiden first out in January Week One, but has started only twice since in the Unicorn Horn Juvenile Turf Sprint and Spring Cup Grade Five Turf Sprint. Her latest start was a fourth place finish and she’ll also be looking to redeem herself for her connections.

Amaris will start from gate three in this field of five fillies. She is a massive daughter of Frozen Motion and Axis Mundae. She broke her maiden in the Unicorn Horn Juvenile Turf Sprint and has yet to finish out of the top three. She’s a big gal at 17 hands and she is surprisingly quick out of the gate. There are no dedicated front runners in this race and the lead could go to either this SOPS filly or Faded Dreams.

If there is any filly bred for the six furlong turf race, it is Wings of Jayde. The small bay daughter of Hall of Famer Pegasus Wings and Sugar Jayde had the hottest following last year. She hasn’t exactly ran away with the wins, but no one really has in this contested division. She won her first race in the Kudzu Stakes at five and half furlongs and has finished third in her last two starts. She’s a quick filly, but she won’t be on the lead.

Finally, we have Faded Dreams. She finished second last out to the scratched Game Over in the Spring Cup Grade Five Turf Sprint, but she had an otherwise terrific February. She’s won at this distance and she isn’t the type to get hot if she finds herself on the lead.

They’re all in the gate now! And they’re off!

First out of the gate is Wings of Jayde, but the bay the filly is quickly overtaken by Faded Dreams and Amaris. Moonstorm has found herself stuck on the rail briefly and she looks vaguely uncomfortable with the outside pressure from Wings of Jayde. On Wings of Jayde’s outside, is Grayson Meadow’s Spirit Of The Angel.

Faded Dreams has assumed command of the field, but she is dogged on the outside by Amaris. The large gray filly is bounding easily over the turf, using those giant strides to her advantage as she pushes Faded Dreams through an opening quarter in :22 1/5th seconds. Three lengths back in third, is Moonstorm, followed by Spirit Of An Angel and the strong closer Wings of Jayde. The field is relatively bunched behind the leaders who are locked together in battle.

Faded Dreams is pulling on the bit, but her rider is keeping her firmly in check. He doesn’t want to be easily overtaken by Amaris and needs enough to stave off the closing fillies. Faded Dreams settles down through a half in :46 3/5ths. She isn’t getting a breather today with the added pressure.

As they round the far turn, it looks like Moonstorm has pulled herself up a bit on the rail. She’s back to last now and it looks like the rail may have intimidated her just a bit. Spirit Of An Angel and Wings Of Jayde bolt away from her under urging from their riders and it looks like Moonstorm is going to go wide now!

Faded Dreams and Amaris have lost their advantage now as they straighten up in the stretch. Amaris stretched out and she is now going head to head with Faded Dreams. Amaris has the lead with three hundred yards to go now and she’s tackled by Wings Of Jayde! Wings Of Jayde is surging down the outside with her ears pinned and her strides blurred. She is being chased by a game Moonstorm, but it doesn’t look like Moonstorm is going to get by the brave faded dreams. Spirit Of An Angel gives a good effort, but she can’t keep up with the sudden uptick in pace.

It is Amaris and Wings of Jayde down to the wire. The big filly and the small one are battling like Goliath and David in the last hundred yards! Wings Of Jayde uses her outside advantage and takes the lead under rapid urging from her jock! She flies under the line, a nose in front of the big gray lady! It was a length back to Faded Dreams in third! The final time of the six furlong race is 1:06.70, a scintillating time!
