On the days Lassie actually wanted to run, she'd break out of the starting gates as though someone had set fire to her flanks. She'd tear up the turf tracks, stalking after whoever was ahead of her. She'd never get ahead of the pack until the very last possible moment, as though teasing both her competition and hopeful onlookers. It came to our realization that she was an incredibly lazy horse, which is why she had her specific days of doing things when she felt like it. It was then that we switched her to shorter distances and this is where she really shined and came through.
Personality
At first glance, the number one thing that stands out about Lassie is her brilliant red coat and vast amounts of chrome. And the amazement from afar ends there once you approach her and realize that she's a short little mare with the most basic, average frame for a Thoroughbred. On top of that, she isn't the meanest horse around, per say but she takes the saying "acting like a mare" to another level entirely. She is picky when it comes to what she'll actually eat, it's always a guessing game determining what she's in the mood any particular day. In her racing days, she'd even have days where she would refuse to run, much to the embarrassment of her jockey, trainer and owner. She'd just stand idle in the starting gate watching the other horses leave before (after ALOT of encouragement) heading off at the slowest canter possible down the track. In truth, she was a laughing stock. But on the days where she actually felt like running? You wouldn't recognize her. Unfortunately, in the race where she was bound to break her Maiden (after landing in unsatisfactory positions as we only learned before her last race that she preferred shorter distances), she pulled something in one of her legs, resulting in us sending her to the veterinarian. It was a blessing that she would survive the endeavor after surgery and extremely careful monitoring, but she'd never be able to run hard on the tracks again, resulting in her being retired early and allowing to mature until she was ready to be sent out to the pastures in preparation for her life as a broodmare.
