Lethal Dose To Return In Y16
After Lethal Dose notched another second place finish in the Black Eyed Susan Handicap, Ripley Marsh has decided to put a stop on the mare's campaign. "The main goal was the Breeders' Cup Distaff in December Week Four. She's almost there, but I can't get her any better than those second place finishes. I'm not disappointed in her at all. She's come a very long way, but she's just one of those horses that's going to need more time."
How much more time? "I have no answer for that. We'll give her a break from November Week 2 until December Week 3. She'll start training again December Week Four and make her first start in late January, early February. That'll give her time to just be a horse and relax. She's had an arduous campaign and she's been asked to do a lot since Supernatural retired earlier this year."
When asked if Miss Marsh regrets retiring Supernatural early, she shrugged. "Not really. She went out with a bang. Two wins in a row. She was the Red Mile Champion last year and in Year Sixteen, she'll produce her first foal. I wouldn't have had her first foal if I'd kept her in training."
Witch Creek followed in the tradition set by their friends Akita Rose Stables. The mares of Witch Creek are not immediately bred following the conclusion of their racing careers. "I'm not quite sure when Lee will retire. If she does well when the tougher distaff mares retire, she could stay in training for a while or until she reaches Grade One. By that point Nocturnal Runaway, Enrapture and Awestruck might be ready to assume control of that division."
"As of right now, Lethal Dose just needs a break and time to recover. There was no point in throwing her to the wolves. I have too much respect for Shenanigans, Restricted Access, Battle Wings and the like to pitch her against them for the millionth time."
