You all know Speak Easy, the colt who was on fire in the Kentucky Derby. You all know Aquatic Addiction and Silver Serendipity, two of Firestone's top sprinting horses. You all know Red Herring, the red horse who was a major threat last season, but nobody seems to know Dark Maiden, the quiet little filly who runs under the radar. Born in Year Twelve to unknown parents, this 15hh bay filly doesn't nearly match up to any of Green Horse Fields or The Wire's sprinters in her age category. Horses like Sun King, Lilith Wind, Shenanigans, Chatoyant to name a few are at the top of the sprinting leader-board. But that's not to say that anyone should underestimate the underdogs.
When Firestone Racing picked up the small filly in March of Year Fourteen, she had a total of two races under her belt. Even then she was still underclassed compared to her two year old counterparts. With the hard work of trainer Carter Leeson, and jockey Talia Smith, they finally managed to break Mai's maiden streak in a HOTY race no less. Since then, Mai has been consistent at the undercard level, which Carter has been content with. However, with the recent abundance of great horses, Mai has slowly been falling through the winning cracks. February was a great month for the bay filly, both of her races were wins, but since then has been consistently placing second or third.
The consistent placings in small HOTY and undercard fields really proves to Carter and the rest of the Firestone staff that Mai does indeed have the talent to compete in the sprinter division against horses her own speed. She is definitely not a bad horse, but nobody has really paid much attention to the quiet horse. On the track, Mai likes to make her presence known but with the current fields and amount of entries she kind of just fades into the background, and being 15hh does not help with her image. However, with Dark Maiden's recent consistency it proves a threat to the undercard sprinters. Dark Maiden is out for revenge...and wins. And everybody better watch out for the small horse. You know what they say...the best things come in small packages. Trainer Carter Lesson was not available to comment.
