Mind Your Own Biscuits
Wishing For A Heroine and Aaron Evertt
Fall Workout
Pourin' salt in my sugar won't make yours any sweeter
Pissin' in my yard ain't gonna make yours any greener
And I wouldn't know about the rocks in your shoes
So I'll just do me and honey you can just do you
So hoe your own row and raise your own babies
Smoke your own smoke and grow your own daisies
Mend your own fences and own your own crazy
Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy
Pourin' salt in my sugar won't make yours any sweeter
Pissin' in my yard ain't gonna make yours any greener
And I wouldn't know about the rocks in your shoes
So I'll just do me and honey you can just do you
So hoe your own row and raise your own babies
Smoke your own smoke and grow your own daisies
Mend your own fences and own your own crazy
Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy
No one had been more excited than Tanner Grayson the day that Wishing For A Heroine arrived at Grayson Meadows after Blue Cross Estates yet again went out of business and re-homed their horses. So eager was the young man in the mare's potential that he decided the best way to train and race the feisty daughter of Everyday Hero was to put two of his best horsemen on his staff together to make the mare's future career the best he possibly could. With that he teamed Aaron Evertt and Steve Wilson up on Heroine.
A shock to everyone, as Aaron Evertt normally just worked out horses when they needed an extra jockey and normally trained the Sprinters at Grayson Meadows. The Turf Triple Sprinter Crown winning trainer knew a thing or two about horses like Heroine, which is what landed her the mount. Steve Wilson on the other hand had incredible abilities to train horses of any distance but preferred routers and milers. The combination of both of their brains was a lethal one and one that would for sure bring Heroine many wins in the future.
As Tanner said it: "A few Horse Of The Year race wins and we may have a serious breeders cup contender on our hands."
Over the past few days the knowledge that the staff at Grayson Meadows had acquired was nothing short of valuable. In total Heroine had managed to burst from her stall and out to the front lawn of the stables a grand total of seven times in the past three days. Between her sneaky tendencies and talent for breaking some of the most expensive pieces of tack she could find. She had about single handedly raised the amount of curse words that were said at the stable by a solid fifty percent. Not to mention Crook and Heroine had become friends off the bat and when the two were together you bet all hell was going to break loose.
Sam could be heard yelling some rather colorful choice words from across the stable as he was tacking the filly up which sent Aaron and Steve running down the barn isles to go assist the groom who apparently had his foot stepped on by the lovely mare.
"I've handled pigs that have had more respect that you! You-"
"That's quite enough Sam we'll handle this from here." Aaron shot Sam a warm smile and slipped her helmet on. The small, plump, older man walked away grumbling.
"You're not that evil are you?" Steve scratched Heroine's forehead while Aaron tightened her cinch up one final time and checked her tack to make sure nothing slipped in all the chaos.
"Nah, she just has a very special spot in her heart for good ol' Sam." Aaron giggled and leaped up onto the mare. "Haven't done that in awhile."
"Well you'll be doing it a lot soon." Steve let go of Heroine's reins and patted Aaron's leg before the pair headed out to the track.
"Easy four furlongs, if it feels like she has plenty left then push her. I want to know exactly where she's at right now." Steve said as Aaron trotted off onto the dirt track with Heroine.
"Hey now, I'm a trainer too. I think I should be able to make some calls here." Aaron joked, pulling the filly in a tight circle as she tried to buck Aaron off.
"But you're not her trainer." Steve pointed out.
"Okay you can do your thing and I'll do mine sound cool?" Aaron loped off with the mare not waiting for his reply.
Heroine bucked again and Aaron laughed at the mare, "you're going to have to do a lot better than that to get a rider like me off." Once finished with the warm up Aaron trotted Heroine in a small circle and stopped for a moment. Taking in the new sights of the fading summer as the sunlight danced across the track. To think it was almost winter again.
"Alright girl, lets see how you're feeling today." Aaron kissed and clicked to the bay mare and they took off at breakneck speed. The mare was nearly all out sprinting but holding back enough to tempt Aaron to push her faster. Her movements were so athletic, balanced. Ears perked high into the air and Heroine easily rounded into the far turn. It had been awhile since Aaron had really gotten on a horse by herself on the track and ran a workout. Normally she just trained her horses and helped train the yearlings. This however, she could get used to.
"Alrighty, lets show mr. this-is-my-horse-to-train what you can really do today." Aaron let the mare have her head and hand rode her into the final furlong. The acceleration was quick, easy, Aaron could tell this mare had potential. Pushing her through her gears they crossed the wire rather easily. Aaron let out a yell of triumph and Steve looked approvingly at his watch.
They finished their run-down and Aaron trotted Heroine up to Steve. "So?"
"I think she's ready."
Aaron gave him a wicked smile. "What are we waiting for then? Let's go out there and give them all hell."
