ATHENA'S DESIRES AND HENNA TURATH
SILENT SNAP AND AMBER BLACK
BUTTER CUP SPRINT/SPEEDWAY STAKES PREPS
This was it; the final leg of the series that they had worked so hard for. Amber and Henna exchanged their usual secretive glances as they mounted up. Athena shifted in place; Snapper arched his head arrogantly and glared at his rival of a workmate. Theirs had become a barn rivalry legend despite them running on different surfaces. This time, they would work out separately, but they were certainly going to go to the track in company. It was only fair, after the weeks spent racing through this series and preparing for each leg.
Snapper would go first. Amber let the colt go as Henna continued to warm her filly up. Snapper galloped with a boundless stride that was seemingly uncontainable. Class dripped from him; the chestnut colt had become truly brilliant over the course of the summer season and was only going to become more devastating as the months passed. As it was, he clipped off fractions of twenty three and forty six even while barely working hard. Amber actually pushed him for the final quarter and got it at one ten flat or so. That was all she needed out of this colt; his form had only continued to improve and he was ready as he would ever be for the Speedway Stakes. Amber had faith in their victory; she had done everything possible.
Athena was next to go. She took to the turf with a determined sort of coldness that meant business. She wanted to run fast; Henna could feel the mare beginning for release. She smirked and kept the filly deliberately slow for a bit, clipping off twenty four flat and then forty nine. But for the final quarter...well, Athena flew. She raced the six furlongs in one eleven, running her final in twenty one at a great sprint. Athena loved to sprint; the faster the race, the happier the mare. Speed had been bred into her and was apart of her soul just as much as it was part of Henna's. Henna could have chosen no better partner for the trials remaining in the classic sprinter series.
Once more, the two SOPS horses had taken to the tracks and proven their form and speed for their upcoming races. It remained to be seen if this would be enough to secure their victories and the stardom destined for them. They had already reached victory in their riders' hearts; all that remained was the race.
