Fall Workout
As the sun rose higher in the morning sky, Carter was relieved that they were almost done for the day. Four more horses needed working, and three of them were being led to the track now. The first horse he noticed was sweet little Emma, with her pink nose and quiet eyes. She was one win away from grade two, and she seemed to like the undercard races more than the HOTY ones. Nevertheless, Carter knew she had the class to run in HOTY races; it was just a matter of picking and choosing which one’s would get the best outcome. Walking behind her was her half-brother, Arlequinn. The five year old stallion was so unpredictable when it came to running, and Carter had even considered an early retirement for him. But with his most recent placings, Carter had backtracked and reconsidered the idea greatly. Out of only six starts this season, four of them were wins, and he had a few HOTY placings thrown in there. As soon as the little bay stallion hit grade one, Carter thought it would be best for him to retire, seeing as it was hard to find races anyways for him. Rounding up the pack was sprinter superstar, Demi. The small gray filly let out a shrill whinny when she saw her friends, chewing on the bit. Demi had only racked up two wins this season, with a handful of 2nd place HOTY starts. The turf sprinter division was rough this year, and it included the famous Demonic Desires. Demi would have to compete against the toughest before she retired, but there was no other way to get her some exposure.
Carter, who stood at the other side of the fence, grinned as the riders mounted their horses.
"Four furlong run, it should be pretty interesting, and give us an idea of what to expect come race day.” All three jockeys smiled and nodded and stepped onto the turf for their warm up. Each horse had a different running style, which made it easier for the workout set up. Carter knew Demi would lead the whole race, but it was up to Airy and Emma to press her on and try to overtake the small horse. Talia was riding Airy for Devon, seeing as he couldn’t be on two horses at once. She got the whole low-down from both him and Carter earlier, which should help her to ride him the slightest bit better. Sammie was aboard Emma as usual, riding her canter quietly and smoothly until the time came. Demi was fighting for her head with Devon, but with a few short checks she settled down enough to listen.
When they were given the signal, all three horses shot off like a rocket. Demi was, as predicted, the first one who shot forwards; but this time Devon was prepared for the bolt and held on tight. Emma broke a little quicker than Airy, but it was not by much as they started to move out on to the track. Airy fell behind the sabino filly while Demi moved on at a sprinting pace. Things were calm as they thundered around the track, the jockeys giving signals to their mounts, as their horses listened well. It was a quiet work with little action, the three horses moving well beneath their jockeys and showing their clear form off.
As they moved into the second half of the workout, Talia pulled Airy wide while Devon and Sammie started to drive Demi and Emma toward the line. Demi was making a good speed, and her long stride was sure as she stayed out in front by a length. But both Talia and Sammie waited a moment - although not long - to make their own moves on Airy and Emma. As the crop cracked, the bay stallion started to power forwards at a good pace, three wide and down the stretch.
Demi had a solid lead, but Airy and Emma were closing well. The five year old had some real acceleration behind him, but Demi had the advantage of the distance between them. Emma was somewhere in the middle, being urged along by Sammie. The jockeys worked hard to bring the best out of their horses as the three of them drew equal to each other coming down the homestretch. They fought in the last few strides of the work, a battle of wills, as they crossed the finish line. Carter was watching through his binoculars as he watched Demi sneak a nose in front of Airy and Emma. Airy had a slight advantage on the outside over Emma, who was boxed in the middle, but it was an overall tough, close finish. Nobody wanted to be the lost and fading horse, and he could tell there were bound to be surprises come race day.
