Fall Workout
When Carter made his way to the track from the stables, he was surprised to see his quad of horses already warming up on the turf. He had told them their plan earlier, and what was to be expected, as he helped tend to Dark Maiden, who was showing signs of heat in her tendon. However, after icing it seemed to return to its normal state; though they would have to keep an eye out for it. He watched as the horses and their riders cantered slowly around the track in their warm up lap. Carter was watching carefully, watching the four horses, and was happy to see that a recent retiree was loving his time back on the track.
Flying Solo bounced around the younger horses, nostrils flared and tail streaming in the wind. The seven year old stallion was making his Year Fifteen debut in a little undercard race at The Wire built for grade ones and retired horses. Meaning that Solo had as much as a chance than the others, seeing that he was a) already a grade one, and b) he was retired. Beside him was Vetanda; the odd coloured horse stood out like a sore thumb, but that was definitely not the case. After two third place finishes in June, Vet was out and hungry for a win. He had already racked up four this season, and was desperate for more.
Like A Lady was kicking up a fuss underneath Sammie, pinning her ears at the young Scintilla beside her. Lady had managed to break through to Grade Four, and it was much deserved for the turf filly. Despite her bitchy attitude, the mare had a handful of firsts and second places, and was due for another win after her 2nd in the Everett Nevin Stakes. Tilly was major due for a win. She still was stuck in the 3rd place slump, something Carter did not understand about her. The filly was built tough for longer distances, and at the rate her record was showing she really needed a win. More than half of her races were HOTY starts, and the black filly had never done worse than 3rd…which just adds to her 3rd place slump. Carter was hoping this workout would give her enough edge for that win next time out.
This group of horses would be using the gates today. It would be good practice for the juveniles in the crop. When they reached the gate, the attendants were waiting patiently to help them load up the horses. All four Thoroughbreds loaded with minimal fuss, only Solo was acting a bit antsy but that was normal for the stud. A few moments of silence passed by; nothing but the wind in their ears. The shrill bell rang out, closing the silence as the gates flew open.
Since there was no real front runner in their workout, Devon let Tilly take the lead to test out her versatility. Solo was hot on her black tail, breathing down her neck like the seasoned racehorse he was. Johnny was hoping that he hadn’t lost too much energy and speed during his time off, even if he did get ridden on trails and such. Behind the bay stallion came Lady, ears flat against her head as if she was becoming aerodynamic. Vet closed the pack, James letting him do his thing. The horses set a decent pace, nobody really pressing for a big lead at first. They weren’t running a great distance, seeing as Solo was the only sprinter in the field and would spend his energy elsewhere, and there were the two year olds in the field as well.
Furlongs went by and nothing changed, really. Solo’s breathing was starting to get more laboured due to his out of shape body, but he kept fighting on as they rounded the backstretch. Lady and Vet were starting to make their moves behind Solo and Tilly, each stride bringing them closer to the leaders. Tilly was fighting hard with the seven year old beside her, unaware of the two horses behind. James and Sammie were basically caught up to the leaders, Lady putting a fighting nose in front of a hard closing Vet. Johnny let Solo do his thing, only giving him a slight tap on the shoulder as they came closer to the wire. And it paid off too, Solo coming past the finish line a full head in front of Tilly, Lady, and Vet; although the three younger horses had given him a pretty good fight to the end. Sometimes experience just overrode physical ability, and despite Solo being out of tune, he was still the same old Flying Solo everybody knows. Tilly felt amazing and ready for a next win, as did Lady who was fighting Sammie to lash out at the two winning horses. Vetanda was on a roll, and this workout would not affect him in the slightest bit, if he continued the way he was performing there was no doubt he’d be G3 in a few months.
