VENTURA AND AMBER BLACK
DEVIL'S FLAIR AND VALENCIA ANDREWS
INCOGNITO AND KYLIE SILVERSTAR
COINCIDENCE AND HENNA TURATH
VEN'S AUTUMN DAWN TREADER CUP WORKOUT
This workout would consist of four horses all going at it, Amber decided. Ventura hardly needed the stern test, but she was heading to the Autumn Dawn Treader Cup. Fierce pride for the mare trickled through her. She had proven herself not only a capable sprinter but a fantastic horse still in the classics. She had taken on Nightshade and Mourning Passion at their home distance and knocked them off their hooves for a bit with speed. Nightshade had taken the win, but she was the top distance mare in the country, and Ventura was the top sprinter over the dirt, and Nightshade was not going to be in this Dawn Treader Cup. Amber looked forward to the challenge, craved another win for her mare. They just needed six more to meet her goal. Ventura was a powerful five year old who was hard to work alongside. She took no prisoners, doled out extensive punishment and did it all so easily. But the colts she faced today could take it on. Devil's Flair strode over the dirt as easily as if it was turf. He was slowly finding the stride he had apparently lost, and Valencia was nursing him along. Amber eyed the blazing chestnut and smirked. Devil had a marathoner's body and a taste for the dirt. She had an idea of where to send him as the season progressed, but he could use the speed test against Ven to get him going.
Incognito strode at the edge of perception. Kylie Silverstar was grateful for this. Since piloting Pandora to Turf Triple Crown victory, the press had been after her. Nero's ability to blend and not attract notice helped her here. However, the colt was good, and the press were slowly getting more interested in him. They paid attention to the sleek black colt and her blushing rider as they warmed up, and Kylie sighed as a result. Her colt was excellent and did deserve the attention, she knew. So she welcomed it, drank it in while it lasted. Nero was facing some tough horses today, but the colt never let her down. He entered battle and left it the same way - fiercely determined to win, though you would be hard pressed to find these strong emotions in the colt. They were accompanied by the brilliant gray Coincidence. He was brilliant in terms of his mind and his performance. No smarter horse graced the roster; Coney always knew how to turn a situation to his advantage. Henna barely needed to think aboard this horse's back; she just let Coney run and made sure he didn't run into other horses.
The quartet warmed up alongside each other for a bit and then took to the workout. Ventura shadowed Devil on the lead, Coney just behind and Nero shadowing him. They made a beautiful herd as they ran, the dirt better left by their hooves. Devil threw solid fractions that Ven evenly matched, turning his own game around and pressuring the pressurer. Yet even with mounting speed, Coney and Nero kept pace easily, developing to the point where they could at least do this during workouts. Amber decided to press it faster, letting her mare fly as they hit furlong number five. Ven took the lead, but then Coney was there. The gray launched an impressive assault, frustrating the two behind and challenging the mare more than twice his age. The other two were forced to go wide as they hit the stretch, but even then it was almost over.
Ventura crossed the wire first, with Nero breathing down Coney's neck and Devil swinging wide and still coming with a charge. It was with a blur of speed and finesse that they finished, and the grins of the riders could not be mistaken as they cooled their horses down.
