Blue Cross Estates' April Workout Reports
It's been a difficult journey back into the racing world for BCE, but they've more than managed it, with April Week 1 already bringing forth multiple wins as seen in Saving Sanity taking the Avril Maiden and successfully breaking her maiden, Dreaming Of Glory taking the Blackbelt Stakes at BSD, and Passion Limits moving to win his first prospect race his very first time out against a group of very accomplished yearlings. With excitement running high within the Estate, The Eighth Pole was invited down to observe the makings of champions as we looked in on the month's workouts.

The Last Of Us- This filly is a new juvenile to the barn, and has yet to race under the blue silks of BCE. She was recently brought over from France from an esteemed thoroughbred breeding facility known as Fleur De Cheval, and head trainer Alexander Descartes has high hopes for her. She has been assigned the increasingly successful Jaimie Sandler as a jockey, and the pair is expected to accomplish great things. The young chestnut is the definition of grace and poise, and ran like a dream when she was taken out for a brief three furlong breeze. Blue Cross plans on debuting her in April Week 2 at GHF in the Maiden Dirt, and is very excited to show off what they have. "I get on her back, and it's like I'm in another world," Jaimie Sandler told us happily, giving said filly an affectionate pat on the neck, "I can't wait to let her show off her stuff."
Snap Daddy- Also from unknown lines, this black filly ran a third place finish in TW Kermesse Maiden. Ridden by Madeline Walker, the loss was disappointing, but expected. "She was up against horses with far more experience than herself. The winner of that race, Sweet Mimosa, was going out on her seventh try to break her maiden. We think once she get's use to it all she'll settle right down and romp her way to a win." The filly is a hard worker, and ran a hard four furlong sprint with a confident jockey on board. They ran one of her fastest clocked in times yet, and it was enough to bring a smile to her trainer Tommy Lux's face.
Song Of Ascent- For such a little horse, Song Of Ascent definitely has a big attitude. Ridden by jockey Christopher Descartes, the tiny chestnut put up quite a fuss on the track. "He's from the same place as The Last Of Us, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. That filly is as cool as water, but this guy? He's all fire," The jockey admitted almost joyfully as the colt trotted big, continuous circles, clearly fired up. "We're still trying to figure each other out, but when we get going, it'll be impossible to stop us," He added, before finally straightening the colt out to a linear trot. Song Of Ascent competed in the GHF Stable Face-Off in hopes of breaking his maiden, and finished at a close second. "We aren't too worried," Trainer Alexander Descartes said, "He's got a competitive edge that won't allow him to hang in the back for long."
Ground Zero- The newest member to the BCE racing team, and definitely one of the most eagerly awaited, is Ground Zero. With the pedigree of a champion, he's the first of known lines to grace the Y15 juvenile crop, and though he's off to a rough start, it's expected to change. As always with the underdogs at BCE, he was taken under the wing of Stanley Newton, the Estate's head jockey. "He's a beautiful runner," Newton said after coming back from a three furlong blow out, "But he's got a big head on himself mentally that makes him a challenge. He likes to work on his own track of thought, which doesn't often parallel my own. Once we get on the same wavelength though, we'll be the ones to beat," Newton stated. While the colt certainly has the kind of regal attitude that comes with being a winning racehorse, he has yet to back himself up, and it will be interesting to see how, when, where, and if he does it.

Palisades Pirate- The very newest edition to the Estate, BCE bought the colt off of Stride Of Perfection Stables at the end of March. With six consecutive wins, the colt is a G4, and his pedigree leads way for him to do impressive things, as he is sired by Shiver Me Timbers, out of Palisades Silver. The jockey assigned to him is Madeline Walker, who professed openly her new-found love of the colt. "He's a real sweetheart that loves to run, you can't ask for a better mount," She told us excitedly. She proceeded to take him for a long blowout, where the colt traveled an impressive seven furlongs in hand and still managed to shatter his previous track time. "He's had a bit of a rough go, and hasn't secured a win since February, but we're confident he's going to return to the track and blow us all away," Said Alexander Descartes.
Criss Cross- A long time favorite at the Estate in her days as a juvenile, Criss Cross in no way fails to impress as a three year old. "Back in her days as a juvi, she was just coming into her own, and then the Estate closed down and she lost her momentum for a while. We still remember all this filly can do, however. Why, her very first time out, all the way back in May Week 2 of Y14, her first time out she gave Lissome of Intrepid Racing a run for her money. In a field of four, with three very accomplished two year olds at the time, she placed second among them. Lissome, and the majority of those horses, are all G3's now. There's no reason why Cross, once she get's her legs back under her, can't put out the same performance as them." Criss Cross and jockey Jaimie Sandler, at the time considered a jockey combo to watch, put on quite the performance for us, taking the white filly seven furlongs in a breeze. "She's top notch," Said Jaimie Sandler, "We just have to prove it."
Saving Sanity- One of the originals of BCE, the palomino filly recently broke her way into the G5 ranks after months of struggle and an even greater period of idleness. "Turns out all she needed was a six month lay off," Jockey Stanley Newton said jokingly before taking the filly for a light two furlong stretch. "She's been hard to figure out. Eventually, we've realized she does all thing in her own time. If that means she's slow to start, then she'll start slow. She has a lot of heart though, and a good deal of talent, it's just a struggle to get her to show it off." Said Alexander Descartes.
Agorion- "I've never, in all my life, met a colt I've liked more," Alexander Descartes admitted as we watched three handlers struggle with the giant dapple grey monster, "He's an absolute pain, and he never wants to do anything except eat, but when you get him on the track on a good day, I'd rather cut off my hand than bet against him." We were unable to attest to the fact, as the colt put up such a resistance to jockey Madeline Walker's control that Descartes waved them in after only two furlongs. "He's a mean brute alright," Alexander Descartes said, "But he's a speed hound too."
Ghostly Girl- "I'm super excited to ride this filly," Stanley Newton admitted without qualms. As the filly just ran her way to victory in a very stacked and competitive Focus Stakes at GHF, it's easy to see why, "She was completely in her element. It was fantastic to watch. She just blew away her competition, no questions asked," The filly was taken for a light two furlong breeze in the wake of her triumph, and looked just as classy as she had in her previous race.

Barely Legal- A mare that is definitely shaping up to be a fierce contender, Barely Legal ran a top notch workout at the Estate's track. She breezed for about five furlongs and then really dug into the last two, making for a very happy head trainer. "We're trying to get her back into familiar rhythms, and we think she's responding to it," Descartes said happily. "She's really starting to show us where and what she wants to do for her final year, and we're going to run with whatever she gives us."
Wishing For A Heroine- The well know "poster filly" of BCE ran quite the impressive workout. "We're really hitting the gas on Heroine this year. We know her, she knows us, and we both know what we are capable of doing together," Said Stanley Newton, "She's the big horse of BCE. She's two wins away from breaking into G1, it very well might be her last season, and we want her to make an impression. She's got the entirety of Blue Cross behind her, all rooting for her. We love her with all we've got, and we want to see her soar." The mare ran one of her best times yet over seven furlongs, and when questioned on her turf campaign versus her Y14 dirt, Descartes had no fears, "She's a dual horse. Yes, she's a monster on the dirt. But she's also one on the turf. We want to showcase her in all of her glory. That's why she's on the turf, and that's what she's out to prove."
Dreaming Of Glory- A fast approaching favorite, the big chestnut went out to win the Blackbelt Stakes at BSD, running his way right into the heart of BCE. "He's a gorgeous boy," Said Jockey Jaimie Sandler, "He gives as much as he gets. He's a perfect partner, really well motivated, and he has tons of energy. We're really excited to see him climb up the ranks." The colt flew over seven furlongs in an intense blow out, and really showed off his speed and poise, as well as his almost effortless maneuverability when on the track. "We're hoping for Glory to become a real menace on the track," Said Alexander Descartes, "When the competition starts hurting, that's when we'll be happy."
