To say Grayson Meadows ended March with a bang would be something of an understatement. So without further ado the newly crowned Stable Face Off winning stable will give you it’s April workout report.
Juveniles
A True Hero - The handsome son of HOF Everyday Hero and HOF The True Nut has been working well under Hadley Grayson. “He’s a rather spooky horse, he’s always been that way. He’s just a bit more cautious than most horses are, but when he runs, his incredible ability to pay extremely close attention to everything that’s going on around him is a huge advantage.” Jockey Hadley Grayson said when asked about the colt. “He’s been working as well as we would like him to be, I think he’ll make a dent in some of these upcoming dirt two year old races here at the wire.”
All That Jazz -
Determined and quick, Jazzy is ready to make her next start a winning one. What this filly lacks in HOTY experience she makes up for in determination. She most recently went head to head with our own Honorary and about beat the older gritty mare. Not only has Jazzy been taking to the dirt, but she's been taking steps to start running on the turf as well, we've found that she takes to it very well too. The possibilities with this dark filly are endless and she'll run over any distance or surface we ask and still put in a heart filled effort. One thing is for sure about her this daughter of Dark Sunrise and Jazzman, she quite enjoys running the legs off of her competition.
First Class -
Riddled by bad performances, March was not this guys month. Chester surprisingly reminds us much of our own Take Flight at this stage, and we expect he'll rattle off a win here for us at some point. He's been breezing in the company of Prima Donna and occasionally Daddy's Overdraft, and this horse thrives off of the competition and thrill of racing. "He had a few slip ups, I think we all learned a lot in his past few starts. Honestly it wouldn't shock me to see him somewhere in the top three or if not the winner of his next start." Trainer Steve Wilson beamed over the colts progress.
Rough Diamond -
The beautiful and fast daughter of With A Snap is set to hit the Horse Of The Year two year old races heard this month. "We know she's good, but we want to figure out just how good she is. She's a talented horse, and I wouldn't put here anywhere near those races if I thought she couldn't handle it, little are her starts but large is her stride and heart." Trainer Aaron Evertt commented on the risky move for the filly. The bay filly has been working with all older horses lately and has learned a great deal from the likes of Attractive Flight and Allouette Divine, giving them a scare in their most recent works.
SmashDashing -
Dash has been nothing short of stunning for us in these last few months and it seems that this little experiment to see if Flight Of Fancy could produce a successful sprinter seems to be a success. He'll be heading into a challenging month as well as Rough Diamond. Dash has been lighting up the track with a few bullet works. "Once he grows into himself some more he's going to be an animal, his shoulders are huge, he's simply just built for the sprints." Trainer Aaron Evertt described the colt.
Tell Me A Fable -
He's been having some... issues getting that maiden win. Six starts, five seconds, and one third. If there is one thing consistent about Abe is that he rather likes that second place spot. The small colt will likely be given quite a break to grow some more into himself after he breaks his maiden. "He's going to be a late bloomer. He's one of those horses that just needs some more time and he'll probably be back towards the end of this season, that's assuming he gets that maiden victory in the next month. If not, we'll break him and hope he'll do it next year." Trainer Steve Wilson said about the son of Truth Be Told.
Classics
Call Me Crooked -
Crook kicked off March with a solid win over at Stride Of Perfection Stables and she looks to show zero signs of slowing down. The daughter of Crooked Fire and Royal Assault just keeps getting better and is scheduled to hit one of the last Turf Triple Tiara preps and she looks to be nothing short of ready for it. "You can't deny that she's a classy horse and she'll run the legs right off of anyone who tries to prove otherwise. She's incredibly versatile and has been rather effective at a mile, we may just send her into a leg of the Turf Triple Tiara. Who really knows, she'll tell us if she's ready to go into something like that or not, but it isn't out of the picture. We may even run her a little over the dirt, she's won a few races over it already, it's like I said, with how she's working the possibilities are endless." Trainer Aaron Evertt excitedly said about the filly. "She's been outrunning Tears Of An Angel and they have something of a rivalry forming, how could I not be?"
Chatoyant -
The talented son of Death Flash's pride is set to make a few appearances in Stride Of Perfection's new series for three year olds. "It's no secret we've been finding it difficult to find places to run him, but it has given us a lot of time to work with him; which it's proven to be rather beneficial for us. I mean he just breezed four furlongs in 49.80, I mean it's not super fast, but he was breezing. That's not that bad, I'm incredibly pleased with his progress so far this year." Aaron Evertt said about the colt who seemed to come out of no where in the middle of last season.
Honorary -
It's always been rough with this filly, she's always had to fight for every race she's ever run in, but it's made her an incredible horse to compete against. She has so much heart and grit that she even outran Silver Secret in her two year old season. Honorary is a horse of a different breed to everyone around the barn, she's not like all the other thoroughbreds, there she's thicker, she doesn't quite dance around like they do. "We bought her off of an auction in Nebraska, and they didn't seem all too willing to give us a pedigree. We figure she's a Nebraska-bred, and if that is the case, she's done very well for what we payed for her, which wasn't much." Trainer Steve Wilson said, "and as for how she's working, well lets just say she doesn't take kindly to being beaten, so she always does her best to make sure she's the one on top at the wire. As for where we are going to send her, well if you think that 4th place finish scares us you're wrong, she's going to hit the last few Triple Tiara preps and if she exits those in a good order, well the Triple Tiara is where she will be."
My Kingdom Come - The talented filly that came from the same sale that we bought Honorary off of has been steadily working better as she's slowly making her full comeback. "She's different, she's a very dominant horse, but she doesn't throw herself at other horses to prove it. She just pins her ears or glares them down. I've never seen a horse do something like it before, but she does it, and she isn't scared of other horses trying to take her spot at the top." Trainer Evertt said about the grey filly, "she practically dares them to come at her." If this is any indication to how this filly races, it won't be long before she starts to rack up wins for Grayson Meadows.
Take Flight - There is nothing about him that disappoints us, he's working just like we would like him to be. "He's doing everything we've asked of him and more, I mean he's doing exactly how you would want a horse that is pointing to the Turf Triple Crown would be doing, maybe even better. I don't want to press our luck too much, but I must say he's better than great." Wilson said when asked about how the current favorite for the Turf Triple Crown was doing. If his workouts are any indication, he will be a serious horse to watch come that final week in April when the gates open for the Kentucky Open. There is one thing for sure, he'll definitely be in the mix that day.
The Apathy - Comet has been quickly improving, now G4, the little filly that could will be taking on a few Horse Of The Year races and may possibly be present at the end of the Triple Tiara. "She's got a lot of improving left to do, but she'll get there eventually. If not, I do believe we have a decent undercard runner for this season in her." Trainer Steve Wilson said about the filly, "I do think we could score some major upsets with her."
Older Horses
Attractive Flight - The half brother to Forbidden To Fly is one short win from Grade One, when he gets that victory, well that's another story. "It isn't a secret that we've always struggled with this horse, but that win in the Carter Handicap* and then the London Sprint, I think something may have clicked in his head. If that is the case, who knows, I won't say he'll be the next Forbidden To Fly, but he may not retire right after that 13th win." Trainer Aaron Evertt said. And the stallion has been working much better this season, perhaps last season was just working out the final kinks before he finally explodes into something that is incredible.
Allouette Divine - Still stuck at grade three, Divie has been making large improvements in the last month. "She's been giving Tears Of An Angel quite a bit of trouble here and there." The mare who was outstanding during the Triple Sprinter Crown seems to be coming back, and with a vengeance. "She goes out every day and runs her heart out and comes back with her ears pricked and head held high. She's sitting on something huge, and all I got to say is that you better watch out, she'll thump someone by a mile soon here." Trainer Aaron Evertt warned.
Daddy’s Overdraft - One of the barn favorites, Daddy's Overdraft seems to rather enjoy sticking to the undercards, and that's exactly were she'll stay. "If she starts to preform very well in them and responds well to the schedule we have for her, she'll take to a horse of the year race here and there when we think she's ready." Wilson said, "this is one of my barn favorites and it's not just because she's sweet, it's also because she's fast and has a huge heart." Which we saw when she took on the likes of Passion Heart in one of their most recent works, were she got her nose down on the wire in front of the gritty mare.
Dare To Impress - A mare that has had a formidable career, and she certainly runs like a champion, but it doesn't show much at all in her results. "She's been a very confusing horse to all of us, she's one step forward and three back. I don't think she's an undercard horse, I think she's better than that, but her results say otherwise. However, I don't think she's a Horse of The Year race winner quality right now, she sends us some rather mixed signals. We aren't sure exactly what we are going to do with her. She does well somewhere and looks to be improving, heck she won a Breeders' Cup race last year and she looked incredible coming out of it to say the least. She flopped in every start we put her in after that until she got that 13th win at Green Horse Fields in February and she looked great there too, but it appears she's not doing as well as we thought. There's only so much we can do. Early retirement? Maybe. We aren't sure yet, but she may or may not be offered up for lease sometime here if she can't get her act together soon. I always try to never give up on a horse until I absolutely know I'm not benefiting them at all, we'll just see how these next few months go." Trainer Wilson said about the mare, trying to stay positive. Imp most recently rattled off a 56 second five furlong work. If she's done running, she certainly doesn't look like she's done.
Dry Your Tears - the daughter of Cryin' Out Loud is making large improvements as she gains more experience. "The more she runs the better she gets, she's immensely talented, and I think we may see a huge grade leap from her this season. We'll probably run into Rules of Passion on the way, I expect we'll find a rivalry between the two this season." Evertt commented. The talented chestnut mare most recently breezed a strong 47.80 over four furlongs and she did it pretty easily.
Passion Heart - "There is nothing like walking down the barn isle in the morning and being lunged at by this mare, I believe it's how she shows how much she loves you. Or perhaps it's hate, who really knows." Trainer Steve Wilson laughed about the feisty black mare. "She doesn't appreciate losing at all to say the least. She steamrolled Prima Donna in their last workout together. She doesn't want anyone to touch her really. It's a struggle but holy crap her times are amazing as ever." Wilson said. Passion Heart's impressive leap from Grade Five to Grade Two last season was incredible to say the least. The dream to get to grade one is almost over, Passion Heart is one win shy of Grade One and it's about time as well. The mare is scheduled to be retired at the end of May and be bred to Hail To Prince. "Will I miss her lunging at me in the mornings? Probably not. But I will say, this is one of the best horses I've ever had the pleasure of training, and she's getting even stronger, and even better with every race she runs." Passion Heart is expected to run the second week of April in an undercard race, where team Grayson Meadows is hoping she snatches up that 13th win. "It's been an incredible ride," jockey Andrew Martin said with a smile on his face.
Prima Donna - March wasn't the kindest to this mare, we couldn't find anywhere to really run her without getting her totally demolished, so we sat her out. Nonetheless it's a great reason to make April much better. Prima has been working steadily in the company of her own half sister and the two have been making nice progress. "It's her year, that three year old season was very tough, but this year, this year is a new year and she's already doing much better." Wilson said when asked about the mares progress.
Speed Rush - the half brother to Mastermind also ran into a few problems finding paces to run in March, but he's back in all of his front running glory. "He's fast, and not just fast, but I mean like, fast, fast. If the name Speed Demon wasn't already taken I'm sure that's what he would have been named. It's exactly what he is. A horse that can carry their speed like that over five or eight furlongs, that's not a common find. Fitness isn't the issue with this horse it's his inability to handle not being a front runner. We're working on it, but he's done very well in the last month."
Tears Of An Angel - She's done nothing wrong in the last few months, and her dominant win in the Stable Faceoff was something that everyone should be looking into. "There is a reason why she was brought back this season, she still has lots of run in her, and lots of fight. There is no clear dominant head of the turf sprinting division as of yet, and she's going to get to battle with Demonic Desires for that but I think she'll do well this season, especially since she's rounding back into top form very well."
