After the first few prep races for the Triple Crown coming to a close, there doesn't seem to be a clear cut favourite in the road to the Kentucky Derby. With over 10 horses in the running, competing over two tracks until the big day in May, the results have been scattered all over the board. In the Wood Memorial, it was Pandora who stole the spotlight at Green Horse Fields. Over at The Wire, Saintly Touch nabbed the win in the Southwest Stakes. Later in the month, Casualty Of War beat out Speak Easy in the Blue Grass Stakes in a thrilling finish, and at The Wire, it was Sun King who wasn't going to be denied in the Holy Bull Stakes.
With such a tough group of three year olds this season, it doesn't look like there will be a Triple Crown winner. Firestone Racing isn't giving up just yet. Speak Easy, a horse who comes from unknown bloodlines, has yet to make his move in the Triple Crown running. After coming a solid third in the Wood Memorial, and a blazing second in the Blue Grass Stakes, trainer Carter Leeson hopes that the Santa Anita Derby will bring the 15.3hh colt a win.
"He's been absolutely phenomenal this season already. His workouts have been nothing but impressive and he's always on his toes and ready to go." The black colt was one of Firestone's original two when they first started out, and Carter admits he wasn't expecting much out of the colt. He came to the farm as a lanky two year old with no muscle or desire to do anything. Sonny was the laziest horse in Carter's roster, and the 39 year old didn't think he would make it far.
"There are horses around him with well known parents and siblings, and I honestly didn't think he would bring this much joy to the farm." Speak Easy was one of the heavy favourites for last year's Breeders Cup Juvenile, where he lost by a nose to Saintly Touch. Carter hopes that the colt continues to bring greatness to his name.
"I don't know what else to say about him other than that he will bring his A-game to the Santa Anita Derby, and that the other stables better watch out for him, because he's out for revenge."
And there you have it, ladies and gentleman. The wonder horse of Firestone Racing, Speak Easy.
