DEVIL'S BLESSING && TALIA SMITH
LOST IN MEMORIES && SAMMIE PICKETT
LOST IN MEMORIES && SAMMIE PICKETT
Talia and Sammie stood by the track while Carter brought out the next two workout pairs. Devil’s Blessing was causing a fuss in his right hand, trotting in hand as he chomped at the bit. The sabino mare in Carter’s left hand was getting annoyed at the stallion beside her, pinning her ears against her head. All Cian wanted to do was run away from the hold on his mouth as he tossed his head and squealed, threatening to lunge at Emma. With a sharp tug on the chain by Carter, Cian settled down but was not happy that he had to do so. Talia quickly took the bay horse away from Carter, who was giving Sammie a leg up onto the small mare. When Carter was done, he hoisted Talia onto the stallion and they set out for their six furlong gallop.
Carter had decided against the gates since both horses were pretty seasoned when it came to breaking. Cian pranced on the turf, the soft earth was springy and he was on his toes. Emma took the more relaxed route, but still looked keen and excited. Both horses trotted side by side as they made their way on the outside rail of the track. The horses were keeping their own pace, neither Sammie nor Talia pushing them too hard just yet. Cian was practically hopping in place since all he wanted to do was run, but he was good at listening to Talia’s commands. With a nod to each other, Sammie and Talia simultaneously asked their horses to canter, both which responded in an instant. Cian was giving Talia a hard time, tossing his head up in the air and had almost smacked her straight in the nose. With a few hard checks, he settled into a nice rhythm beside Emma. The mare took things easily, springing into a relaxed gallop, flicking her ears back and forth between Sammie and the high-strung stallion in front of her.
They galloped on as the wind whipped their faces, causing them to hunker down closer to their horses’ necks. Suddenly, four furlongs have gone passed and the jockeys decided to loosen the horses more. Allowing the horses their heads, Cian shot off, instantly relieved that he was able to run. Each stride was fast and he began to show his competitive streak. Being a front runner, Cian quickly took the lead and blazed around the turn, kicking up the turf behind him. The mare wasn't fazed by the high pace that Cian set. Emma wasted no time in dwelling on the horse in front of her, and she was soon by the colt's withers. Perspiration was breaking out on both horse and rider as the day got hotter, but it was quickly cooled by the wind. Cian and Emma were no strangers to being workout partners and easily knew how to push each other’s buttons. Emma knew Cian hated to be crowded and challenged, and that’s just what she did. With no urging from Sammie, the mare ran closer to the bay horse, who in response pinned his ears and swished his tail. The finish was in sight as the jockeys rode out their mounts, not using their whips once. Cian managed to edge out the mare, but not by much. Emma wasn’t fazed, since Cian needed the confidence booster to pull off yet another win. Talia and Sammie pulled their horses up from a gallop to a trot, and then finally back to a walk.
