REFUTE && JOHNNY GARNER
When Johnny came back from his break, there was a single bay horse that was waiting for him. Refute stood with his back leg propped up in a resting position. He was saddled and ready to go, and Carter was leaning against the rail holding onto the reins. The colt was having a rough season, and it showed in his demeanor. Ralph wasn’t his normal lively self anymore; it was almost as if he was disappointed in his recent performances. Carter couldn’t blame him, he was disappointed too, but it was all part of the learning curve that the horse was experiencing. Hr wanted to work him solo today, just so he could get a feel for the track again.
"So how long do you want him sent out?" Carter patted the light bay colt on the neck.
"Just breeze him slowly for five furlongs. I don't want to butcher his confidence even more." Ralph seemed almost hesitant as Johnny was given a let up and Carter led him onto the track. Ralph trotted forward, but Johnny turned him back to face his boss. Carter looked up at them, sober look on his face. Johnny took that as a sign, nodded and steered the colt down the stretch. They took off at a slow jog heading towards the starting pole.
Carter planned to race him in either the Lacis Stakes, which was April Week Two and the Jaunce Stakes in April Week Four, both at The Wire. The son of DW Flamekissed was still fairly green but hopefully he would be able to pick up the pace and be able to run in one leg of the Turf Triple Crown. Hailey looked around. It seemed that she was the only one running her horse today. Carter spotted them through the morning haze that was starting to fade away and clicked his stopwatch as they took off and passed the starting pole.
Johnny squinted through his goggles. Ralph’s strides were extended and uneven in the dirt, but still brief and swift. He breezed across the track like a rocking horse. Johnny sat the strides nicely as dirt flew behind them. After a few seconds, Ralph finally hit his stride and without even knowing it, they had entered the homestretch. Johnny asked Ralph for a little more speed and he responded. His already lengthy strides seemed to extend, as the bay colt glided across the track easily. Johnny urged the colt to flatten out and change leads aggressively. Ralph was digging into the ground, his body almost parallel to the ground as he sped up. Johnny was starting to feel the old Ralph again as they moved around the turn; all he could feel was the acceleration of the colt.
Just as suddenly as he had entered the homestretch, they had reached the end of their ride. Johnny steered the colt around, slowing Ralph. He threw his head in protest but obeyed his rider. He patted him, removing his goggles and trotted the colt back to Carter. Near the end, he definitely started to feel like the two year old he rode last season. With a few more races to build up his confidence, Ralph would no doubt be back on his game and would be tough competition to beat.
