Two Year Olds
Barely Smokin – February brought on Harley’s first HOTY race of the season, the Spring Cup, where he raced in the Grade Five Dirt. Racing against older horses, he rallied to finish a neat second place. Since then, his workouts have been a solid 6 furlongs to prepare him for his next outing in March. He loves to work with our chestnut filly, Fire Goddess, and he galloped his 6 furlongs in 1:15.00. With a 100% placing percentage, Harley is ready for his next adventure.
Fire Goddess – While February wasn’t Fancy’s best month, her workouts have proven her abilities otherwise. She’s a smart horse, and her latest workout posted a 1:15.79 run, just milliseconds behind partner Barely Smokin. Fancy looks on point and she has never run a better workout than her recent ones. Her speed and stamina will be tested in the Ohio Juvenile Stakes on Week Three at The Wire, but Carter has no doubts that the small filly can rebound from her mediocre February cards.
Hellfire – Sharp as a knife, the spirited black filly has been none other than stellar. Flame is a tough horse, battling out a four furlong run in 48:00 seconds flat. Her start in the Flagalt Derby against older horses landed her a solid third place, but Carter was pleased with the sight of her keeping up with the veterans. The daughter of Catching Fire oozes talent, and you can watch the slender black filly take on the toughest juvenile milers in The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Mile come Week Three.
Like A Lady – Fierce as a sphinx, the bay filly out of Sweeto Cheeto is taking matters into her own hands. Carter made the mistake of entering her into a race with older horses, where she fell short into fourth place. Despite the mishap, Lady ran a nice five furlongs in 1:03.80. This sets her up extremely nicely for the Ontario Lassie Stakes, a HOTY races for juvenile fillies at The Wire. Lady is in excellent form and she is waiting to redeem herself from her slower start to the season.
Scintilla – Determination is what makes up this sweet horse. The black filly had an impressive February, placing third in both HOTY races she was entered in. Tilly breezed a solid six furlongs in 1:16.00 over the turf, just a second under her fastest time that was clocked last month. Tilly is nothing but happy on the track and should prove to be an obvious threat come week three.
Innerstellar – Tyler is a literal lean-mean fighting machine. The bay colt ran in Week One, placing a disappointing fourth in a big field of five. The reason for his demise is he sets a burning pace at the beginning, not giving him enough time to breathe and set himself up. His recent workouts have been teaching the hot-blooded colt to relax and ease back on the lead once leaving the gates. Tyler worked a nice two furlongs in 24:39 seconds to keep him fresh and on his toes for his next outing – something not determined quite yet.
Three Year Olds
Speak Easy – The superstar black colt is in great shape for the upcoming Triple Crown prep races. Sonny has always been level-headed and calm about the most exciting things, and that’s what separates him from the rest of the three year old crop. The colt of unknown bloodlines has proven Carter wrong on so many occasions, and that’s what makes him such a solid contender. Since Sonny loves his workouts short (we learned that the hard way), his most recent works have been solid three to four furlong gallops. 47.60 seconds was the time that was clocked and recorded in his most recent four furlong gallop, and he looked even better than before. Catch him and his revenge on Pandora in the Blue Grass Stakes coming Week Three.
Silent Heart – Carter isn’t rushing things with this slender bay filly. Since transitioning onto the turf, Heather has had a 100% placing consistency in her three races. “She’s come a long way, that’s for sure. Honestly, we weren’t even sure if it was worth racing her in her three year old season, but she proved us wrong and I hope she continues to do so.” She breezed a nice five furlongs in 1:04.20. “We will try her in a HOTY race Week Three to see how she does, and hopefully she will be able to perform well.”
Dark Maiden – The little filly with the heart of gold made the world spin when she reached a grade four status. “Since her win February Week One, she’s been on top ever since.” After winning the Twinkle Stakes, she continued her win streak to fend off three-year old colt Silver Lining in the Spring Cup Grade Four Dirt Sprint. She’s been recently worked the same three furlongs, each week increasing her time. This week, she blazed up the dirt in 35.82 seconds. “I want to test the waters with her in the new series at The Wire, called the Something Original Cup. Hopefully it’s not too much of a challenge for her, but there’s no harm in trying.”
Whispering Melody – The shy bay filly is really starting to come out of her cocoon this season. She went from a scraggly two year old to a nicely shaped three year old just within a few months. She, too, is now a newly turned Grade Four runner, but that could pose a challenge when running against older horses. Wendy looks fabulous in her workouts, and recently ran six furlongs in 1:12.40. “She’s a horse who just needs more experience to get comfortable with the races surrounding her. There’s no doubt she will become tougher as the season goes on and she matures fully.”
Refute - After a disappointing week, three year old Refute has had a fairly unresponsive start to the Year Fifteen season. The son of DW Flamekissed and Finale Slew has hit a much-unwanted slump in his racing career, despite looking good in the colt’s distant future. He’s had fabulous workouts and impressive times, such as his most recent five furlong blowout in an impressively fast 59.40 seconds, one which might have been a track record. Carter had originally planned for Ralph to compete in the Turf Triple Crown, seeing as when he was a two year old, the colt answered well when it came to the right time. However, his recent disappointments in both Turf Triple Crown prep races have Carter rethinking his plans. “The colt is no doubt in top shape and one of the toughest horses in the turf division this year, anyone is blind if they don’t see the raw talent in this horse. His workouts have been extremely impressive and he has been putting in fast times, I just don’t understand where he is going wrong.”
Siren Call – The Grade Three daughter of Shiver Me Timbers is having a hard time finding races well suited for her abilities. Once three year old sprinting races pick up, there is no doubt Siren will be at the top of them. She’s been working consistently over three furlongs and most recently ran a solid 36.60 seconds. “We’re sending her against the boys the first time out since the filly races don’t start till later. We want to get her as much exposure as we can, not just for the experience, but because we believe that she can really outrun the colts in the Sprinter Triple Crown.”
Flashing The Declaration – Finding races for Flasher has also been difficult, but the recent announcement of the Reach for Perfection Series, a series dedicated to three year olds only, has Carter hopping for joy. It gives horses like Flasher who haven’t had much success a chance at running with horses of his own caliber. In preparation for the series, he was worked three furlongs and a time of 39.20 seconds was recorded. Once he gains experience, he could possibly be one of the bigger threats come mid-season.
Vetanda – Vet is extremely close and one win away from achieving his Grade Four status. The odd coloured colt is also entered in the Reach for Perfection series, and in preparation he cruised along in his most recent workout over the turf with a time of 1:03.20 in five furlongs. “He’s slowed down a bit from his last recorded time, but he’s been building up stamina and not speed. We need him to be fit and secure with his stamina before pushing him hard for speed. Once the stamina is there, the rest falls into place easier.”
