Hall of Fame
Tears of an Angel and Andrew Martin
My Kingdom Come and Hadley Grayson
You could go the distance
You could run the mile
You could walk straight through hell with a smile
You could be the hero
You could get the gold
Breaking all the records
That thought never could be broke
Do it for your people
Do it for your pride
Never gonna know if you never even try
Do it for your counrty
Do it for you name
'Cause there's gonna be a day
When you're standing in the hall of fame
And the world's gonna know your name
'Cause you burn with the brightest flame
And the world's gonna know your name
And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame
Be a champion
Lucy rubbed her head up and down on the side of her stall door with her mouth open and tongue flopping up and down as she did so. She'd been tacked up first for some odd reason. If anyone knew Lucy, they knew she should always be the last one to be tacked due to her rubbing her bridle on everything. In her short amount of time at Grayson Meadows, Lucy had managed to ruin five bridles, and three halters. She was an easy keeper in terms of feeding and basic care, but she was one of the most expensive horses in the barn due to her horrible habit of rubbing her bridles and halters on everything and breaking them. They'd tried about everything with Lucy and all ended with a broken piece of tack so they'd just given up and usually had someone holding her. The barn was a lot busier than usual because of the Breeders' Cup and everyone’s mind was slightly scattered.
Bey stood in the stall next to Lucy glancing around in many directions as Steve worked on tightening her cinch and Sam worked on getting her legs wrapped. Hadley walked down the barn isle with her hair pulled back into a high pony-tail. She greeted Bey quietly mumbling words to her like 'pretty girl'. She walked over to take Lucy out of her stall and held her so she couldn't inflict anymore damage on her bridle.
Steve and Sam finished up with Bey and gave Hadley a leg up on the smaller steel grey filly. Although she wasn't really that small next to Lucy, who was 15.2 hands. Both where fairly small but it didn't stop either from racking up wins.
Andrew was given a leg up onto Lucy's back and they were on their way out onto the turf track at the wire to do their final workout before the Breeders' Cup. Well, Bey wasn't participating in the Breeders' Cup but she worked well with Lucy, both of the girls were laid back and very competitive with each other, neither would let the other slack off.
Bey had been one of the first arrivals at Grayson Meadows, she hadn't been raced much due to not having anywhere to run and just small little breaks in general, but the filly was very consistent and could pose a threat next season. Despite being lightly raced, she'd still managed to get herself to grade four status as a two year old with only 10 starts. She was a flighty filly, and scrawny as they came but she was so athletic. There had been small debates over whether or not to send the filly to the Breeders' Cup but opted not to send her due to lack of experience. Her talent was there, but they'd rather she didn't get trampled and run all over.
Then there was Lucy, the mare was so successful as a two and three year old and held so much promise going into her four year old season. Unfortunately, mismanagement and an injury really set the mare back and cost her several races. With her previous form being so sensational, Grayson Meadows had decided to bring her back next season so she could get her time in the limelight. They didn't expect her to run in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf Sprint, but the lack of entrants made the race a good confidence builder if she won or it could just be good for her to run against some of the top in the business.
Lucy had the talent, she had everything you could want in a race horse, but she was still getting back into form. Many thought it was crazy to send her to a race where she would likely loose and loose badly, but team Grayson Meadows were optimistic when it came to the Breeders' Cup, win or loose she was still coming back next season, and she was still going to kick some serious butt when given the opportunity. She'd notched a win against Loud and Clear recently, who was participating in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Lucy was returning to her old form, but like all things, it would take time.
The filly and mare stepped out onto the track, Lucy wearing an official Breeders' Cup workout blanket and Bey had on one that said work-mate. Their hooves sunk slightly into the turf, neither displayed energetic behavior like that of Daddy's Overdraft, or Allouette Divine. They simply went about their day quietly doing as their jockeys asked.
The two gated with no issue, and broke strongly onto the backstretch. Lucy kept her head ahead of Bey's but Bey wasn't allowing her to take it easy. She pushed and poked at Lucy to see if she would break, but she wouldn't. It was odd, considering Bey normally didn't run like that during a race, she only did it in workouts. Lucy held her own though, and she let Bey push her, she never acted like she was out of her comfort zone, and looked rather regal galloping alongside her steel grey workmate. Her ears were perked and her head was held high, she hadn't looked that good in a very long time.
The Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf Sprint was likely to be a bit slow and an odd race in general because all of the mares had preceding and pace pressing tendencies. The question was who was going to take the lead? Steve had ordered the workout to be moved quicker along than normal in case Lucy did indeed need to take the lead.
The girls thundered down the backstretch and into the final turn, Bey's ears were perked straight up and she was gathering herself for a run at Lucy, one that may just result in a win for her. Lucy was ready though and she wasn't letting go of that lead, Bey was going to have to fight her for it and she was going to have to fight hard. Hadley sent Bey a little early and they were soon head-in-head, and nose-in-nose, matching each others strides perfectly.
The homestretch came sooner than expected and Bey dug her heels and exploded off of her powerful turn of foot, launching herself a length ahead of Lucy. Not to be out done, Andrew shook the reins and Lucy surged into overdrive, flying past Bey and beginning to draw off by a length and soon a length and a half. Bey was closing in on her lead but Lucy refused to give it up, flying past the wire a length ahead of her workmate. Lucy was on a roller coaster that could only go up from here.
