Bad To The Bone
Allouette Divine and Jessie Coppermen
Tears of Blood and Alex Shade
On the day I was born
The nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder
At the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up
Said "leave this one alone"
She could tell right away
That I was bad to the bone
Bad to the bone

Jessie got a leg up onto his leggy, bay filly with a bright white star in the middle of her forehead. She screeched with delight, Divie was certainly ready to run this afternoon. She blinked her eyes wildly, she breathed rapidly but not because she was tired.
As usual Tears seemed to be in a grumpy mood, if he had eyebrows they would be narrowed and his facial expression would always be a scowl. However, the ill-tempered, grumpy stallion was very loved around Grayson Meadows, even if he did bite a few people along the way.
The pair made their way out to the track Divie was so excited that she had major issues walking in a straight line, but it was completely normal behavior for her. It had been a joy ride with Divie all season, she’d been bought after Valkyrie stables closed its doors for a short amount of time. Grayson Meadows was only thinking about getting a sprinter into their three year old division and never expected that the filly would end up in the sprinter triple crown and even winning a leg of it. She had thrust her way into the three year old colts sprinting division and proved that she was no joke by beating Optimus Unstoppable in two thirds of the sprinter triple crown. She’d showed up horses like Flash Point and Alucard and proved that a filly was more than capable of running up in the big leagues with the boys.
She’d been put on a halt recently though, and although she hadn’t won since October, and she wasn’t a grade one runner didn’t mean that she wasn’t still capable of ripping her way down the stretch to snatch the win impressively. After some discussion it was decided that the filly was going to run back with the girls and step off the gas a little. Divie was going to run in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint against the likes of Ventura, which may have sounded quite scary seeing as the mare hadn’t been given a proper chance to really show what she could do and she was coming off of an impressive win. Dirty Diana was a horse to keep your eye on, but she’d done most of her winning over 8 and 9 furlongs all season and her participation against top caliber horses in horse of the year races was smaller than Divie’s but one should know better than to dismiss that. Then there was Midnight Sun, also a grade three runner like Divie with one win to her name all season, seemed like she could take the race in an upset but the biggest upsetter would be Daydream. A horse who hadn’t been touched for nearly a year and was just getting back into the swing of things. The race was loaded with speed on the front end of things with Midnight Sun and Daydream, the two would be going at each other for the lead while being pushed by Ventura. The race was completely set up for Divie to rush down the stretch and win, but she wouldn’t be alone, Dirty Diana was also a closer and it was likely that the two of them would end up flying down the stretch. Either way, Divie was set up very nicely for a win and Jessie intended to give it to her.
Tears on the other hoof was a different story, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint was going to be a tough race, but in light of his recent run ins with Mastermind that ended with him only losing by a nose both times showed that perhaps the stallion was sitting on something big. Of course Forbidden to Fly was a completely different horse than Mastermind, but Tears of Blood was starting to round up into very nice form. The contenders consisted of Forbidden to Fly, Loud and Clear, Rules of Passion, and Tears No More. It was sort of funny, considering 3 of the 5 entrants were related through Cryin’ Out Loud. Forbidden to Fly was arguably the best sprinter out on the track right now, his campaign all season was incredible, 12 horse of the year wins and he hadn’t participated in a single undercard race all season, and he never placed worse than second. Loud and Clear was a strong contender as well, but she didn’t have the horse of the year race experience to back her; however, that didn’t mean an upset was impossible. Rules of Passion was from some of Grayson Meadows’ favorite lines, the Heart of Stone x Passionate Ruler combo was lethal as horses aged and she could easily pull of the upset. Then there was his half brother, Tears No More. The colt had been relatively lightly raced all season, but if his twin sister indicated anything, he was loaded with run and talent to burn.
The race had a front runner in Tears No More, and it looked to be relatively pace heavy, Loud and Clear would likely push Tears No More and Rules of Passion would stalk them with Forbidden to Fly just biding his time and waiting for his time to shine. Tears would be the trailer, but that didn’t concern anyone, he had a downright ruthless turn of foot and he could easily make up several lengths in just a few strides.
The pair gated well and were off in a matter of seconds leaving little circles where their hooves had been just seconds ago. Dirt flew behind them and they locked up in a duel, but neither were really going at it that fast as they were both closers. Tears’ bottle-rocket-red chestnut head poked its way ahead of Divie. He never let her get more than a head close to him, he wanted this workout to go in his favor and Divie didn’t seem to mind, her ears flicked back and forth just waiting for Jessie to let her go and show Tears that he wasn’t going to win this one easily.
The two were soon pushing eachother quicker, and their momentum was building with every ticking second. They were just waiting to rip each other apart and it was only a matter of time before they fullout sprinted at each other. The final turn was quickly ending and Tears was practically jerking Alex’s arms out of his sockets, he wanted to go and he wanted to go now. Divie sat chilly next to him and when the command finally came the two set off at a dead run, their acceleration was instant, much like a person goes from a walk to a full out sprint. It was that noticeable and the two weren’t giving into each other, stride for stride, head in head. They were lunging for the wire and digging in to get ahead of each other. Neither wanted to let go and it was quite the display of heart and guts from the two as they came down to the wire with Tears winning by a head bob. Whatever was in for them at the breeders’ cup they were focused and ready to take home a victory, and they were both very well set up for a win.
