Gold
Attractive Flight and Jessie Coppermen
Dry Your Tears and Hadley Grayson
Statues and empires are all at your hands,
Water to wine and the finest of sands.
When all you have's turnin stale and its cold,
Oh you'll no longer fear when your heart's turned to gold.
Who can you trust
When everything, everything, everything you touch turns to gold, gold, gold.
When everything, everything, everything you touch turns to gold, gold
-Imagine Dragons - Gold
Tia slid her tongue out of her mouth and allowed it to lul lazily to the side, she was sliding it playfully between her teeth. Tia had settled in quite well at the barn, she’d made herself quite at home and Steve said at least five times a day that he’d never seen a horse adjust like that so quickly. All Tia did was walk into the barn and sniffed a little and decided that nothing was out of the ordinary. She loved it at Grayson Meadows and she really didn’t seem to care who knew it.
Matty seemed to enjoy the company of the little chestnut mare next to him, of course, that would be because she hadn’t beaten him yet and he had no reason to hold a grudge against her. The two would prove to make an interesting pair. They did have several things in common but one that stood out the most was their tremendous pedigree and their low grade status’. There was little doubt that they had serious talent, they just hadn’t been given the proper chance to truly let it shine.
Matty was so close to grade two status it nearly came unbearable to watch him run and just miss it or not come close at all. He’d been overshadowed by older horses and younger horses. It always seemed once he appeared to break through he just fell straight back into old habits. It became a game between everyone at grayson meadows, they’d bet money on him between them, hoping this time would be the time he pulled through.
After a little while they’d simply decided that since Jessie had done so well with Divie that maybe he could work some of his magic on Matty. The two seemed to hit it off pretty well and Jessie was excited for Matty’s upcoming race.
Tia played with the bit in her mouth, not quite biting down on it, but more like rolling it around with her tongue. It seemed to be a habit of hers, something Hadley had noticed over time.
The two horses stepped out onto the dirt track and Matty ducked his head in and raised his tail proudly into the air. He trotted along smoothly. He rejoiced in every movement he made and his ears were perked high into the air. Matty’s shiny bay coat reflected off the bright orange of the early morning sun. Tia’s looked to reflect gold, like every little hair on her coat was tipped with a dab of gold. Her happy and energetic personality only added to her golden coat.
Hadley and Jessie began running the two through their warm-ups both looked to be ready to jump out of their skin with excitement.
Tia was hot off of a win and her talent continued to show through with each workout she ran, she had been catching the eyes of other trainers as a possible threat to next years sprinter division, even with her low grade. Her twin brother was a nasty tempered high-class running horse and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Tia followed in his hoofprints, or her half siblings Loud and Clear, Tears of Blood, and Tears of an Angel. Tia certainly had big hoof prints to fill, but she certainly would fill them, maybe even exceed what was expected of her.
Matty wasn’t hot off a win, he was fresh off of defeat and the stallion wasn’t too pleased with Divie when they came back to the stable. He’d attempted several times to bite and kick the filly. Luckily, Divie made it out in one piece and Matty had appeared to calm down after awhile. His next race was stiff with competition and everyone wasn’t exactly sure how he would handle it, but the stallion desperately needed to run. He was a horse that improved the more he ran and next years schedule for him was very heavy with races to make sure he stayed in form.
The pair gated fine and they broke rather slowly due to their running styles. Everything was a bit slower, but that wouldn’t matter, they could outrun their slow beginning in the stretch.
Matty had broken on top with Tia just a head behind him, she looked rather small next to her nearly 17 hand workmate but she kept up with him, matching him stride for stride. Tia wasn’t going to let Matty get off easily.
Tia would be running again in her last race of the season against her own, newly-purchased, stablemate The Apathy in her next outing. Experience wise the two fillies were evenly matched, pedigree and sibling wise, Tia looked to have the stronger pedigree of the two. Her lines were more proven but if Passion Heart and Daddy’s Overdraft had proved this season, pedigree isn’t everything. Tia would have her work cut out for her, she would have to stick closer and run a little quicker than normal, but the race was seven furlongs, one less than her last had been. Tia was ready, there was little to no doubt about that, Hadley had opted to ride her instead of The Apathy in the race.
Matty would be taking on his usual group, Optimus Unstoppable had a massive red target painted on his rear end in Matty’s eyes and if he knew what was best for himself, he’d watch his back. Rules of Passion added an interesting touch to the race. She was from some of Grayson Meadows’ favorite lines, the full sister to Passion Heart to be exact. She’d rattled off four wins so far this season and had won more than half of her starts this season. Matty would have his work cut out for him, but it was only a matter of time before the stallion got back into form, and when that happened he’d run all over every horse around him.
The two continued their descent down the back-stretch, Tia poked fun at Matty and he quickly sped up to counter her ever-increasing stride length. Hadley smirked over a Jessie, Tia was full of run and she knew it. The final turn was gone in just a few moments and the homestretch opened ahead of the bay and the chestnut, who were now furiously battling each other. The whites of Matty’s eyes made him look like he wanted to kill Tia and Tia bumped Matty a few times. The two of them dug their heels deeper and deeper into the dirt and Tia started to gain on Matty, and Matty fought back hard. The two continued their duel well past the wire, Matty emerged the victor by a small nose.
The two underdog, golden-pedigreed horses were ready for whatever was thrown at them.
