Welcome to the Y14 BC Yearling show. As the name suggests, this is a yearling show for future Breeder's Cup prospects, and only yearlings(horses from 12-23 months old) are allowed. It will run the day before the Breeder's Cup begins. There are 2 sections in it: Conformation and Training. Pedigree also plays a very small role in the final placings.
The conformation segment is much like any normal halter show - it's based on the horse's conformation and suitability for the task it'll be performing. Meaning, I'll be looking for a lean yearling with a deep chest(more room for lungs), good legs(obviously), and no major conformational faults.
The Training segment shows that the horse is comfortable around the track. It involves walking the horse around the race track with other horses and a large crowd. The yearlings go 3 at a time, and shouldn't show too much aggression toward the other horses. Foals over 20 months must walk under saddle - younger foals may walk under saddle. The horses then walk up to and away from the gates(not loading, just within about 3 feet), and should ideally stay calm. This is pretty much a test to see how well the horse's temperament and training suits it's potential career as a racehorse.
Horses that win the BC Yearling Show are automatically admitted into a BC Juvenile Race of the owner's choosing (following gender/age restrictions) the following year. They also receive a one furlong distance extension to be used on the winner.
Interested? Then please fill out the entry form and post it below. Good luck. Please note that only Thoroughbreds and Thoroughbred crosses with racing potential are allowed in the Breeder's Cup Yearling Show. There is a limit of 3 entries per person.
