She Can Fly
Honorary and Alex Shade
Honor foamed at the mouth and chomped hard on her bit. Her neck muscles strained in a curve as she ducked her head into her chest and pawed at the earth beneath her feet. She was the last Grade Five horse at Grayson Meadows’ who was an active racer, and although her career didn’t get off to the best start, Honor had quite a record to look at. She threw her head and jumped around her feet making graceful, quick movements making her look every once of a thoroughbred that she was.
Honor was no blue-blood but that didn’t seem to matter to her. Honor ran like a tank and she had guts like no one would believe. Energetic and feisty, she was tall and lean and as elegant as ever. She was one of those horses who had stellar workout times but when she got on the track she didn’t quite run the same. However, with a short break and a lot of works she’d definitely improved.
Alex smiled down at her. Honor had always been one of his favorite mounts and she loved him to the end of the universe and back, he knew it too. Honor would do anything for him. Anything. She hadn’t won since July, but she’d had a large amount of impressive races since. She was often called the Devil’s Flair of the dirt for her ability to push front runners to their limits and still have the energy to pull off the win impressively. Her competition this week would be no exception. She’d be taking on her common foe, the shy Whispering Melody, the lightly raced Ghost Rider, and Lucky Penny Stakes winner Jazzasoleil.
“Let her run as far as she can take you,” Steve had told Alex, and he was pretty eager to see how far Honor could go. He straightened her out and turned her to face the land around her and Honor pricked her ears at the sounds around her. Honor’s nostrils flared, taking in every smell around her.
“Well, off we go then I suppose.” Alex said quietly and clicked to Honor, quickly warming her up and then he tapped her sides with his legs and the filly practically bolted out from under him. He quickly regained his seat and sat chilly on her, allowing Honor to stride. He couldn’t help but watch her ears flick around and how she ran with such delight to be off of the track for once and running. She rejoiced in her strength and the wind in her ears, she flew across the ground as if she had wings. Alex let the filly continue on as long as she could possibly go before getting too awfully tired, and he smiled, you let Honor go and she could just about fly. She was ready to take on whatever was thrown at her, and he was confident that she was sitting on one mighty big run.
