REFUTE && JOHNNY GARNER
Workout for the Golden Slipper Stakes
Refute: to prove that someone is wrong, and boy did that colt do just that. When Carter had picked up the colt from Valkyrie Stables, he wasn’t really sure what he had gotten himself into. The colt hadn’t been doing the best, and his first race with Firestone had proved to be a disaster. Though he had a spark to him, something a little bit magical and his short stature coupled with the trademark thoroughbred head just gave him a pony-like look.
The Golden Slipper Stakes field held the best turf two year olds of which Carter thought that the little bay colt could do it. Carter knew Refute had more than enough talent to steal the race. The handler brought Ralph into the gate, which had no troubles with the large box. Johnny settled on the colts back comfortably and waited for the start.
The gates opened and Ralph broke fast and settled into his front-runner position. Johnny guided the bay colt to the rail and let him run, always keeping a slight contact with him. He kept Ralph contained and on the rail through the majority of the workout as they rounded the curve, testing out his stride and how he could lengthen.
The race they were prepping for was to be 9 furlongs, right in Refute’s ideal furlong range. That meant Johnny could let him breeze past in the final furlong. With the track to themselves for now Johnny was able to let the colt fly. Johnny’s vision blurred as the colt’s legs moved faster as he lengthened his strides. Johnny let go of the pressure on the reins and let Ralph run. The colt was ten shades darker when he crossed the finish pole, but he still carried his head high and proud. Johnny let him slow at his own pace to catch his breath after the hard run, and he knew the colt was ready.
