Back In The Saddle
Prima Donna and Hadley Grayson
Passion Heart and Andrew Martin
... just minutes earlier....
Andrew hopped back on his mount, his butt covered in dirt. Something to be expected of course, considering he’d just been launched from his mount. Ally was more irritable than ever this mourning, biting, kicking, bucking-- all of it. Whatever it was, she had energy to burn and she wasn’t going to let anyone tell her no that mourning.
Donna on the other hand was acting perfectly okay-- well to be expected. Hadley had something of a meeting of minds with the filly a few months back and she’d managed to have some sort of a breakthrough with Prima. Of course, they still had their differences of opinions, they simply put up with each other. It was almost funny sometimes, they were so similar in personality that they butted heads very often. Everyone knew that Hadley had fallen in love with the daughter of Royal Assault, although Hadley would never admit it.
Ally’s next start was the Just A Game Stakes* against the well regarded The Devil’s Hourglass, it was a two horse death match right now, but Ally had done nothing but improve off of her previous win in the Autumn Cup. Tanner and Steve had planned to run her in more HOTY races with hopes of having her possibly win some, and with how her workouts had been going, she was going to give The Devil’s Hourglass a run for her money.
Prima Donna on the other hand was one of the horses topping a undercard race that included her very own stablemate Daddy’s Overdraft. The field was large, but it wouldn’t make a difference, Prima was beginning to come out of her slump and come back into form. Hadley was sure the filly would surprise everyone by the end of the season.
So Andrew and Hadley restrained their mounts, both in different ways, but it was a struggle that mourning. Ally refused to go into the gate and held up their work for about three minutes until she finally went in, Prima had no such behavior to display.
Ally shot from the gate and wasn’t going to wait to let Prima catch up, all her coiled up energy and frustrations made her a powerful force to be reckoned with today. However, Prima loved nothing more than to be a thorn in Ally’s side and she soon caught up with the black daughter of Passionate Ruler.
Ally slicked her ears to the back of her skull and pushed herself faster, if it was even possible. Andrew had been trying the whole time to slow her down, and she fought against him every step of the way, so he’d just let her go, and she didn’t show any signs of slowing. Ally continued striding out strongly with her ears slicked back against her head in annoyance at Prima, but she put up with her. They were soon stride in stride and battling gamely together and they hadn’t even hit the final turn.
Prima pinned Ally on the rail and tried to trust a head ahead of her, but Ally was having none of it today and speed up even more. Her explosive amount of burst sent her surging ahead of Prima and left her a length behind Ally.
The final turn approached faster and Andrew felt Ally begin to relax and tune in on the work. Which it had been about time, of course Prima and Hadley had already started to make their move and Ally took notice of this. She slicked her ears back against her skull and flew around the far turn, sending turf flying in her wake with each powerful stride. Prima struggled to keep up with her stablemate, but she refused to give up. Hadley pushed the bay faster and faster to catch Ally, but Ally wasn’t going to let them get near her today. Ally ate up more and more ground with every stride, and continued swiftly down the stretch. She’d wasted no energy, each stride she took looked effortless, as if she’d been born to do this for the rest of her life.
...
There was no doubt that the two were back, and stronger than ever. They’re foes were going to have their hooves full come race day.
