Four is a Crowd
White Rose and Hadley Grayson
Immortal Flight and Jessie Coppermen
Take Flight and Alex Shade
Girl Talk and Andrew Martin
Lassy tossed her head as Fly nipped at her neck and Alex used all his might to steer the colt away from his favorite workmate. Rose and Nico trotted along at the back of the pack with Hadley and Jessie laughing at the two 2 year olds that had been dubbed ‘the comedy team’.
Fly ducked his head in almost to his chest and fought against Alex, making him appear like he was marching instead of trotting. Which was quite the sight to the viewers in the stands, to see the 16 hand marching Thoroughbred.
Nico remained his pensive self, watching as Fly marched around the track, and Lassy duck her head and throw it back up to watch her stablemate continue to make an absolute fool of himself. Though, he didn’t quite look foolish, nor cute, it looked in a way powerful. Fly always had that dominant appearance, maybe it was because he had a pedigree most would kill for. Fly was bound to be a top competitor for the Turf Triple Crown next season. Well Hopefully. The colt had suffered a few losses recently that were very concerning to team GM, he had lost to a few G5 horses and a fourth place finish wasn’t acceptable.
Lassy on the other hand seemed to have gone absolutely nowhere after her maiden win, she was bound to pick up soon, but probably not until the start of her three year old season. No one really knew where to point her at the moment, she was as streaky and unpredictable as they came sometimes.
Rose sat behind all of this commotion, lightly raced and unpredictable was the perfect way to describe the bay filly. ‘Either she’s up or she’s down’ was a common phrase when talking about the black roan daughter of Spitz. She always left everyone thinking, well this is going to be her race then she’ll go right back to last place finishes. Streaky, but brilliant. Her next race would come in a HOTY race, not exactly the best place for her looking at her record. However the G4 Tawee Handicap* looked to be a good place for her, but with how unpredictable she was, they really wouldn’t know until the race was ran.
Nico was coming off of a 2nd place finish to Dirty Diana on the turf, although the mare had never run on the turf she still took him down and it didn’t make Tanner happy at all. His next start came in a HOTY race with top caliber horses, but the good thing was the stallion would be one of the top runners in the field. In every attempt at a G2 race win he had come in second or third, his time was coming and hopefully this was his time. Of course he would have to go through Dare To Impress, who looked to be improving, and In the Spotlight. With the right layout and a perfect trip he was bound to take the win over his younger counterparts.
Take Flight wouldn’t run until September Week Two, but he still needed to stay fit and he could use the experience, hopefully this workout could click something in his mind. It wouldn’t be easy, but the colt was capable of it.
Lassy’s next start came in the Arizona Juvenile Fillies, there was only one other entrant at the time. Nirvana, the bay filly was improving and Lassy would have her hooves full, but she could do it. However, much like White Rose, she was unpredictable.
The group of four horses made their way across the turf at The Wire’s race track and they all loaded without issues into the gate.
Nico was the first out of the gate, and he was quickly pursued by Lassy and Rose, Fly trailed at the back of the pack and let the top three duke it out. Despite his normal running style, Fly was capable of running at the back in a smaller field, turf in his face never bothered him. The group traveled quickly over the turf, Nico gained a half length on Lassy and Rose, who decided to duel it out for second but Hadley quickly held Rose back and allowed Andrew to take second with Lassy and Fly and Alex sat two lengths behind them all, turf pelting them.
Onto the back stretch Nico continued on with his lead, but it didn’t come without challenge, Lassy was breathing down his throat and urging the bay to go faster and faster, but Jessie refused to allow the stallion to make his move yet. Rose and Fly had seemed to pair up together and ran easily in eachothers company. Rounding the far turn Lassy continued to battle with Nico and Fly had managed to push his way past Rose and began to make his move with lengthening strides on the outside of them all.
Turning for home in the frenzy of thundering hooves and flying grass, Nico lead the charge to the wire, Fly was flying on the outside in second, Lassy dueled with Rose, who was pinned on the rail. Alex waved his whip and Fly accelerated towards his older stablemate, soon Fly and Nico were fighting for the lead with Fly just a neck behind Nico. Rose and Lassy fired down the stretch and were closing the half length gap between them and Fly.
Nico and Fly hit the wire with just a nose separating them, Rose thrust her head ahead of Lassy and came in just a neck behind Fly.
