The Comedy Team
Take Flight and Alex Shade
Girl Talk and Andrew Martin
Steve walked between the two horses, checking their cinches and their overall health. To his satisfaction, nothing seemed to be wrong with either animal.
Flight turned his head from where Hadley was holding him and nibbled on Steve's shoulder.
"Hey!" He snapped pushing Flights head away from his shoulder and glaring at Hadley. Not seeing Lassy reaching over with her tongue. "There's a reason why you're holding him Hadley."
Lassy ran her lip and tongue across Steve's shirt, leaving a path of chlorophyll green spit on the back. It wasn't like it wasn't visible either, the green stuck out like a traffic cone on the back of his pale blue colored shirt.
"Lassy!" Steve turned back to the filly and Flight swiped the his red, worn out Nebraska Huskers cap off of his head. Hadley giggled endlessly at the sight. There was little doubt, the pair could be their own comedy team.
Alex and Andrew trotted in on Tears and Crook, both horses breathing heavily, and they both seemed oddly calm, but that wouldn't last.
"How was it?" Hadley asked.
Crook danced around and squealed with Alex restraining the filly from taking off. Meanwhile, Tears tugged at his reins and tossed his head.
"Great, they're both ready for whatever we throw at them," Alex said.
Crook squealed again and pawed at the ground.
"Great," Steve said grabbing Flight from Hadley and signaled for her to go hold Crook. Jessie walked over and held Tears just long enough for Andrew to hop off of the chestnut stallion and handed him over to Sam, who took Happy in the direction of the barn.
Alex hopped off of Crook and the filly danced sideways, and Hadley patted the bays neck and Crook pushed her head against Hadley's shoulder. "Hey Crook," Hadley smiled and walked after Sam with Crook making all kinds of noise.
"Alright boys, ready to take the comedy team out?" Steve asked, walking Flight over to Alex. The colt had Steve's hat in his mouth in just seconds, and Steve rolled his eyes and gave Alex a leg up on the leggy bay colt. Alex pushed his whip underneath his shoulder and slipped his feet into the stirrup irons.
Jessie lead Lassy out to Andrew and did the same.
"Lassy's gonna win this one," Andrew smirked.
"Let's not forget who is the more battle tested horse here," Alex said leading the walk onto the track.
Flight instantly started bouncing around on the track, dancing with his feet and tossing and ducking his head this way and that.
The boys ran the horses through their warm ups and headed to the gate. Both horses loaded without any problems.
Because of the horses distance and surface preferences, the comedy team would pass each others paths a lot. This would be a small preview to what their races would actually turn out like.
Lassy may be less experienced, but the filly was fast, and she had talent to burn. Flight had already proven himself, and he had a pedigree to die for. There was little doubt that the colt was going to be a top contender for the Y15 Turf Triple Crown.
The gates flew open and Lassy got a step ahead of the slower breaking Flight. The black roan took the lead by a head and the horses were off and running comfortably.
Flight's next race was coming up, and soon. The G5 Take The Chance Stakes at nine furlongs on the turf at The Wire. So far there was two other entries, Agorion and Vetanda. Both had only won a maiden, however, Vetanda had proven herself a strong competitor, coming in second in the jack prince juvenile. Vetanda also had a pedigree to die for, but so did Flight.
Lassy wouldn't run until July week 2, but the filly had proven herself against other maiden winners with a strong second place finish in the Aquafresh stakes.
Andrew let out a notch on Lassy coming onto the backstretch, but Flight let out one and cut into Lassy's lead, she only had a nose on him. Their strides nearly mirrored each others, Flight's stride wasn't even a second behind Lassy's. Just noses apart Flight and Lassy dug in and battled back and fourth the whole way around the far turn. Andrew kept letting notches out on Lassy, but Flight was determined.
Coming into the home stretch, Andrew cut Lassy loose and the filly surged ahead of Flight. However, Flight wasn't to be out ran by a filly, Alex let Flight go and the colt was a length ahead of the filly in just seconds. Lassy fought hard on the outside to cut into Flights lead, but the colt kept going.
They hit the wire and Alex looked back and smirked at Andrew.
"Don't you even say a word," Andrew growled at Alex.
