*Tiara Domination*
Horse: Mardi Gras
Rider: Connor Stewart
For: All Along Stakes (Turf Triple Tiara Prep)
Following a second place finish in the Great Expectations Derby, Elise was running, again, in prep for the Turf Triple Tiara. She had been stabled at The Wire barns for the past week. Lucy decided it was easier to just keep her there for her Week 2 race. She was fresh off her last race, not needing a rest. She didn't want a rest. She wanted to continue running, on and on.
Connor made his way down the shed row. He found Lucy, who was helping the groom, Spur, tack the big black filly up. Her coat glistened in the morning sunlight. Connor admired the young filly from afar. Her head tilted, catching a glimpse of him in her wake. She let out a snort and stomped a hoof. She was growing more and more impatient. The tall filly was built like a stallion. She was incredible to watch, on and off the track.
Once the girth was tightened, Spur gave Connor a leg up and Lucy walked with them to The Wire's turf course. Connor would be taking Elise a mile. It would be a good work for her to stretch her legs. Lucy would give her a couple weeks off, after this. It would be enough time for the filly to recuperate after running two weeks in a row. Elise could handle it, though. She was a fantastic filly.
Elise was entered in the All Along Stakes. It would be the toughest competition she's ever had. There were a few of the greatest three year old fillies out there on the tracks. They were Paranormal Hunter, In The Spotlight, and Acantha. Elise would be a sole longshot, but Lucy knew she had a chance. She was honored to put the filly into the race. She knew she would give it her all.
They reached the turf course. There were other horses out there, getting their morning works in. Elise had her blinkers on. It was the only way she wouldn't get too distracted. Connor gathered the reins and pressed his heels into the filly's sides. She was off almost instantly. They trotted along the outside rail, steering clear of the galloping horses on the inside.
A chestnut filly jogged past them. Elise's ears pricked and she got startled. "Easy girl. You're okay." Connor said. He ran a hand down her neck to calm her. Her muscles loosened and she seemed to relax. A horse breezed by along the middle of the track, fairly off the rail. It caused Elise to turn her head in his direction. She paused in her tracks and let out a loud whinny. She wanted her presence to be known. She sniffed the air, ears moving back and forth. Then, she continued on once she got no response.
Connor urged her into a canter. He made sure they were clear and he turned her around across the gap and settled her onto the inside rail. Her excitement grew as they continued on. Connor stayed quiet in the saddle. Elise would turn her ears in all different directions, listening to the bustling noises. It didn't bother her none. She was perfect and ready to run. She wanted to show them all what she had.
Once they came to the mile marker, Elise shot into a bursting gallop. Connor held her up a little, wanting her to save her energy. They dashed around the first turn. She settled into a comfortable pace as they headed into the backstretch. Elisle noticed a small gray walking along the outside rail. Soon it disappeared as her blinkers consealed it from her view.
The final turn was coming quickly. Elise seemed to shift gears as they headed into the stretch. Connor flashed his whip. "Come on girl! Now!" he called. She responded incredibly well. She had an immensely quick stride come out as she pushed herself down the straight away. They thundered down to the wire. THe whip tapped her shoulder, keeping her composed.
They finished with a fantastic time. Lucy was jumping up and down at the rail, flashing her stopwatch. It was Elise's best work, yet. She was an incredible filly. She would give it her all in the All Along Stakes. The other fillies needed to watch out! She would dominate!
