A dark gray filly strode purposefully across the track in the bare light of dawn. Her dappled coat was groomed to perfection, and shone in the morning light. Her rider was wearing only a light jacket over her riding clothes, as it was the beginning of May, and spring had come quickly to The Wire.
Heading into the far turn, the woman leaned over the filly’s withers and gave her the tiniest of nudges. That was all the encouragement the gray needed. Lengthening her stride and accelerating, the horse transitioned from a light gallop to a breezing run. Her rider kept a firm hold on the reins as the duo rounded the turn, for she knew that once they hit the stretch, the filly underneath her would try to reach high gear.
Indeed, the instant they’d finished the turn, the lanky filly began to pull against the bit and quicken her strides. Her rider muttered to her and kept her in a medium gallop, though, and the filly reluctantly settled down. She switched leads on cue and finished out the work, hardly breaking a sweat.
As the rider pulled her up, the horse pranced and sidestepped, eager to continue running. A few early-rising railbirds checked their stopwatches to find that the gray had worked four furlongs in just under 48 seconds.
The filly in question was named Engraved in Blood, and she would soon be making her first start for Hawkstone Stables. Sherlock was putting a solid work into her to ensure she was prepared, and as she glanced at her own stopwatch she confirmed what she'd thought - Enna was ready.
As they cooled out, Enna continued to bounce around, still full of energy.
"Hold on just a bit longer, Enna." Sherlock cooed. "You'll have a chance to really stretch your legs soon. I know you'll make us proud."
