All of the Witch Creek mares whose foals were going to be kept by Witch Creek have given birth. Witch Creek welcomes into the world the sons and daughters of Candid Silver, Carmilla, Enchantress, Finale Slew, Ashanti, El Sol del Mar, and proud mama, Screaming Mimi.
All of the foals were born healthy and strong though it took a lot out of El Sol del Mar her fifth foal in five years. Our in-house vet in training, Connor Santiago, has been staying with her often while she recuperates. The foal has been bottle fed a few times, but El Sol del Mar is still being regularly nursed to prevent the pain. Sunny will definitely be given next year off and is to be commended for her wonderful efforts. Her daughters Midnight Thriller and Eternal Phantom certainly provided many chills in Year Twelve along with standout colt, Mastermind. She had no foal in Year Eleven, but has a chestnut yearling colt by Native Flame by the name of Sun King. This colt, Uno Momento or One Moment, is a powerfully built bay out of El Sol del Mar's Dubai World Cup vanquisher, Barely A Moment.
Here he is, future royalty himself:
Witch Creek imported Carmilla for Year Thirteen in an extremely surprising move. Dedicated to taking in at least one Akita Rose foal a year, Witch Creek managed to notch a breeding between Grand Silence, sire of Sillenia and Worldbreaker, and Carmilla, a daughter of Night Stalker and blue hen mare Requiem. The foal that was produced by such a savvy combination has the look of a champion in the making. Named Ultimate Impasse, the colt is already showing signs of being stubborn and extremely willful, a trait his grandsire Night Stalker, was known for. He is might already and more of a handful than most foals at this age.
Ultimate Impasse:
The first filly born in the Year Thirteen season is none other than Screaming Mimi's. The black mare took her pregnancy and birthing in stride just as she always had on the track. Her jockey Maggiletti Reynolds was on hand for the birth and could not be more pleased with the beautiful bouncing girl that was born. Mimi's baby is sired by well-bred Sweeto Cheeto, son of Hall of Fame Sweet Stalker and popular stud Like A Cheetah. The filly is beautifully built with an Arab-like head. She is easily the sweetest of the bunch so far. Her name will be Sweet Mimosa.
Sweetheart of the Year:
One of Ripley's most anticipated foals of the year, besides El Sol del Mar's, happens to belong to Popcorn Blitz and Ashanti. Ashanti has turned out to be quite the producer with Ashes to Ashes turning into a grade two star at The Wire. She was matched with the precocious Crooked Fire who helped to produce the strong bay and was again matched in Year Twelve with another precocious stallion. Winner of the Y12 Boys Festival, Popcorn Blitz never turned into the star he was expected to, being a son of Hall of Fame Speed Demon and blue hen Starbucks. However, his career is already taking a turn for the better the birth of the charming blaze-faced colt Ashanti produced. Burning Blitz, Burns as he is referred to around the barn, is quite the cheeky monster. He is strong and scopey with a beautiful chest and rear on him. It looks like Witch Creek will have a tough miler come Year Fifteen.
Prince Charming:
The next three foals are the son and daughters of recently acquired stallion Positively Precious. It is not the chestnut's first round at stud. However, it is the first year that any mares have been sent to him. Grade four on the track, Positively Precious was retired by Stride of Perfection Stables when it appeared that the crop was much too big for all to race. He spent a couple of years at that stable until Witch Creek went searching for a proper dirt stallion. Well, the found him, bred him and have been rewarded with a trio of foals that look to be absolutely brilliant.
Positively Precious' first son is out of maiden runner Candid Silver. The gray mare had an easy time with the labor, though she was quite round by the end of the pregnancy. She was named the fattest broodmare of the bunch in Year Twelve, but it was all because of the gangly monster she produced. Ares is like no other foal Witch Creek has handled. He is wild, willful, dangerous and despite all of the hand work he received at his birth, the chestnut colt still does not tolerate a human hand. However, he looks like a corvette on steroids when he runs around in the paddock with the others. While he is not the best personalty in the barn, he looks like a standout even at this early age.
Monster Boy:
The next two girls are stunners in their own right. Artemis' Glory, girlfriend to Ultimate Impasse, is not only beautiful but an absolute spitfire. She runs circles around the other girls, displaying tendencies to get herself so dizzy that she'll simply tumble right on over. Imp will immediately run to her to check on her, but the second he gets there, she's up and running. She's a bit of a handful for proud mama Finale Slew, but it seems that Finale Slew is more entertained by her daughter than stressed. For those who follow the circuit regularly they know Finale Slew is quite the blue hen. She has produced the likes of Crescential, Jazzman and Intuition. Her two year old son Alucard makes his debut within the next month and she also has produced a DW Flamekissed foal by the name Brain Trust. Artemis has a powerhouse pedigree to roll on the turf. We look forward to whatever the future holds for this firecracker of a girl.
And last, but not least is Witch Creek's hope for the Year Sixteen Triple Tiara. Her name is Aphrodite's Chant, daughter of Enchantress, and while she does not have the powerhouse pedigree of some of these foals, she certainly makes up for it in enthusiasm. She was born at the odd time of eleven in the morning and was the fastest birthing of the season. She is a trouble maker and a future heart-stopper. She gives every human a hard time so far, though not quite as dramatically as Ares, and does have an attitude when forced to to do things she doesn't want to. Sounds like most Witch Creek mares though, doesn't she?
