It was slowly but surely approaching, the race that was. Since coming back into work, Nico had shown that he was ready to take on something serious, and take after his father, Grade One stud, The Immortal, and his brother, Comeuppance. Throughout the year, Nico hadn’t raced due to a hairline fracture, but after he recovered and was given the go ahead by the vet, he had shown that he was ready, fit, and willing to do so. Today, he would be breezing seven furlongs on the turf, the same distance as the race. The entrants for the race were some good contenders.
This would be his first race since his injury. He was undefeated and Ivana wanted him to remain undefeated in his first start since it. The amount of work over the past week he had been through building his muscle back up would be overly insane, and it would be upsetting if he fell at the final hurdle. He wasn’t as experienced as some of the other two year olds out there so would be at a set back for his three year old season, but look at Arachne, and Fiery Touch, not forgetting Frozen Motion. They all came into there own in there three year old season and it could happen to Nico.
In Gate One was Arlequinn, a two year old filly with a big heart. She was a good filly for Oak Hill Racing, and also half sister to our very own filly Lost In Memories. She was a stunner, with a record of 10:1:2:5. She had a case of thirditis indeed, but that wouldn’t stop her from taking a victory today, or maybe even later in life. Her bloodlines were extremely good, her father making the huge leap from Grade Five to Grade Two in a very short period of time.
In Gate Two was Bellefire, the daughter of War Admiral and Vintage. Her lines were boasting for recognition and she was looking very well at the moment. With a record of 9:2:3:2, she also had two wins but left us at a disadvantage on the experience level. She is a very aggressive filly, but with the looks of a champion. She was ready for this and was not going down without a fight.
Jacey let out a large sigh as she stepped out of her office, her eyes watering. She wasn't yet over her miscarriage, but she was destined to keep going for the sake of her stables. When she saw Ivana leading the large colt out of the stable, her face lit up. She now knew it was time to watch him put on a show. Ivana glanced over to Jacey, before speaking. Hey Jace, how you doing today? Didn't think you'd be down today. Jacey forced a smile. I'm feeling much better thanks, and I saw you on the workout rota. I wouldn't want to miss this for the world.
Ivana smiled and adjusted the girth and stirrups before Jacey legged her up into the saddle. The colt snorted as her butt landed in the saddle, but determined to keep going, he walked forward, ears pricked and ready to rumble. He was calm as usual pre-race, nothing would stop him from showing his true colors. They stepped out onto the turf track. It was his first workout over the turf, and with his lines it was proven that he would do good things over the surface, and may even be a serious contender for the turf triple crown in Y13 dependant on how he did today.
The colt glided gently over the turf surface and round the bend before Jacey took a seat in the stands, gazing at the next pole in which the colt would start his workout. They bounced into a lovely canter along the backstretch and as they approached the seven furlong pole, she let him go. Nico felt that she had let him go and he flew forward so quickly that Ivana had to grab his mane. He powered effortlessly along the back stretch, his huge stride taking her to where she wanted to be.
His muscles worked and as he rounded the bend past the four furlong mark he had ran the half a mile in .42 seconds flat. He continued to power round the bend and Ivana began to push him as he entered the lane. Her arms stretched as far as they would go as she pushed herself to the ultimatum. The crop cracked on his rump and his stride opened up, stretching out with an insane amount of speed which brought them to the wire... Ivana relaxed and took a deep breath and let it all wash away. They were ready for this, and they weren't going down too easily.
