Today was the day that the stables had been waiting for, for a long time. Some new bloodlines entering the stable and expecting to stamp them down in the history books. It was the day that Jacey Leigh-Lanning would unveil the new colt that was likely to become a major contender towards the Turf Triple Crown in Year 13. The brother to Grade One racer Comeuppance would set foot on the track today under his new jockey, having only raced twice this year, winning both races. Sat in her office on the particularly odd morning, Jacey set out a large sigh just before the phone ringing alerted her. A very warm welcome to In Stride Racing, Jacey Leigh-Lanning speaking, how may I help? Her cheerful tone of voice answered the phone with an alert welcome. Hi Jacey, it’s Leanne Mitchell, just calling to let you know we have just come off the highway and we will be with you shortly. The grin came upon Jacey’s face. Thank you very much Leanne, I will meet you out there for when you arrive.
Jacey put the phone down and bounded out of her office where the eager members of staff were awaiting the news. He’s nearly here! Eve, Beth, and Ivana grinned and followed Jacey out of the barn to where they would be meeting the colt off the trailer. Now, when he arrives, we will take him for a spin on the track. He hasn’t raced in a while, so Ivana, I leave the challenge to you to ride him today. Ivana smiled. Challenge accepted. Jacey looked towards Beth. Beth, can you tack up Captain and get him warmed up please? We’re going to have a speed dual today over seven furlongs on the dirt track. Beth nodded and jogged back into the barn to continue with the commend. Suddenly, the loud rev of the engine alerted them, and they all looked into the lane where they saw the large silver horse box countering down the road.
Right guys, he’s here! She said to Eve and Ivana. Beth poked her head round the barn door and proceeded into watching. The lorry pulled up and Leanne, the tall slim blonde haired lady stepped down the steps and onto the floor in front of them… truth is, when she was down there, she wasn’t all that tall, probably around 5ft 6, but she was taller than everyone else. She handed Jacey the passport and paperwork. Immortal Flight, Nico for short - he’s a 17.2 bay colt by The Immortal, out of Flight of Fancy, the mother of Grade One racer Comeuppance who is the sire of Little Miss Innocents foal. Everything was heating up. New blood in the lines? Yes!
Leanne unloaded the colt and the jaws of all three girls dropped. Wow.. He is a beauty. He stood tall and muscular, his ears perked. He didn’t have a lot of growing to do but he was definitely a beauty. He was already tacked up with his saddle on already. Ivana, sweets, run and get your hat, we have a workout to do. Beth had finished up with Captain and she walked him out of the barn before mounting. Ready? Jacey said to her. She nodded, and before she could say anything, Ivana was back, being legged up on to the huge colt. Lets get ready to rumble then guys. She said. Fancy staying and watching, Leanne? She shook her head. Sorry, I can’t. I have to go pick up another colt. Jacey nodded and smiled before hugging Leanne. Thank you again darling.
Both colts walked onto the track, one very different to the other. Nico was laid back and relaxed, his energy conserved until before the workout, the other, Captain, was on his toes, raring to go after a long lay off after placing third in his comeback. They already knew the drill for the workout so now it was just time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Captain was a front runner so for the majority of the race he would be leading. Nico was a versatile runner, but Jacey did not know that just yet. They trotted up the track in unison.
They came to the six furlong pole and were loaded into the gate easily. Nico stood still, and didn’t move a step, before breaking like a bullet alongside Cold Mountain, which was unexpected. Jacey’s eyes widened as she saw that, not expecting such a laid back colt to do such a thing. Ivana rode the colt and kept him alongside Captain, who was being pressured to pick up the pace, but every time he did so, Nico would come right back at him. They came into the top of the lane and the colts huge bounding strides over took Captain. Ivana pushed him more and more, and the more she asked, the more he gave… Nico strided ahead of Captain, who was now seven lengths behind. She relaxed towards the wire and a huge sigh of relief whooshed through both of them. Wow, you have a lot of strength in you boy. She stroked his neck. He had just beaten out a three year old with a lot more racing experience he had..
Jacey smiled. She walked out to the colt just as Captain came back to a walk. Well, we have ourselves a winner here, looks like he could be something special. A grin swooped across her face.
