Brody sat light in the saddle as Lissome trotted along the trail from the track barns over to The Wire's turf track. Jaime watched their progress with a scrutinizing gaze as Proteus Prince, Daring Vision and Stiletto Allure fell in line behind the flame hued leader. He sat aboard Princetta, the grey white-hued mare standing at attention and ears pricked as the trio made their approach through the gap and onto the turf. He mindlessly stroked the mare's neck, but his eyes never left the quad of three year olds. Nick was breathing down his neck to see some movement and improvement in the classic string and he was beginning to feel the pressure, but he was discouraged - not yet. The three year old competition was very stiff this year and all over the board. He couldn't worry about anyone else right now. Now he needed to focus on the horses in front of him.
All of the raw materials were there, not it was just time to continue to hone and grow those skills into serious threats - threats he knew each one of these horses could be. Brody and Lissome reigned over the turf. There was definitely a new confidence to the duo and they were eager to prove themselves. Estella Marino was a picture of poised elegance astride a very pumped up Proteus Prince. The black bay colt moved with refined grace and a commanding presence. He wanted everyone to focus on him. Estella smirked at the colts abrasive nature, but had him well in hand as they broke from the chestnut's shadow and into their own space. The white's of Daring Vision's eyes were exposed as she danced over the turf, fighting the control Ariel was exhibiting. Still was frisky, but attuned, her light bay coat dappling in the afternoon sun.
Jaime had backed these four and now it was time to up the ante again. Princetta danced underneath him slightly agitated, but minding her manners more so than the trainees. Jaime kept his seat on the older filly waiting for everyone to settle. "Stella, you and Brody will be galloping a mile first and then home handily in three. Ariel, you and Kyle will be the second set. Gallop those sprinters for five and home in three."Stella threw a look to Brody that matched that of her mount and Prince and Lissome were off with long loping strides as they gained momentum. Prince's confidence had grown, but Stella was there to keep the boisterous colt's feet grounded in some thought and some sense of reality. Prince would always think that he could overcome the world and that was both a talent and a hindrance. He was a devil to ride and a devil to control as Marino was well experienced with now, but still he was always a challenge. He took to a gallop in four reaching strides, but Lissome was there right by his side.
Brody sat poised in the saddle, perfectly balanced as Lissome thundered over the turf with controlled poise. She was in the beginning stages of making a name for herself, but there was still work to be done. She flew with power and confidence, biding her time to Prince's barely contained temper. Jaime cantered along with Dare and Still as the sprinters warmed up and then sent them off on a wave as Lissome and Prince came charging for home.
Still was vibrant as Kyle rode the filly. She ran unhindered and not intimidated by the black lively colt beside her. Jaime waved Lissome and Prince off, satisfied with their work and confident that both would battle well come race day. Dare and Still were blurs as they galloped the brief five furlongs as two contrasting shadows.
