Back in Y11, when Nicholas Landing was planning out his breedings for the year, he specifically thought of the Triple Crown and the Triple Tiara when he bred the likes of Calypso's Fury and Ultimate Revenge. Granted, any hopes for the crown have been dashed on both accounts, but it appears that neither three year old is waving white flags of surrender. It is no secret that Ultimate Revenge is a colt that is near and dear to Intrepid's heart, being the last foal and son of the stallion that started it all for them, Admiral's Revenge. The black stallion to date is the only recorded Triple Crown winner from the foreign tracks of MHS. As a sire, he has thrown three grade one sons, a grade three grade one producer in Akuma Battlecry with his final foals being fillies to hit the tracks here in the future. The Admiral line has been a major influence in the formation of today's dirt competitors. Chances are, if you look at the majority of top dirt performers, you can find a little bit of an Admiral influence. So when Nick crossed his beloved dirt performer and producer with Akita Rose's Charisma, he was looking for magic and that's just what he got in the resulting colt that we all know as Ultimate Revenge.
Thru his dam, Ultimate Revenge is half-sibling to G1 Ramirez, recently retired from the tracks and G1 Knight Rousseau, all top dirt performers showing that the sons of G1 Charisma are geared for that success over the dirt. It was a match of fortuitous advantage and Landing pounced on the crossing and as we can see the final IRS campaigned son of Admiral's Revenge has performed admirably. He was a hard competitor his juvenile season and then came right out the gate swinging in Y15. The preps were crucial to this hard grinder. He's shown versatility in his leg type running in the front or grinding from behind and it's this rare ability that Landing is counting on to give him the edge in the Belmont. The twelve furlongs is directly within the colt's wheelhouse and all of his relations have shown the stamina to be perfectly lethal at this range. His sire was nicknamed the "iron man" for taking the lead and running in the lead from gate to the wire at twelve furlongs on a consistent basis. That being said it isn't out of the realm of possibility for this black bay colt to follow in his sire's footsteps. In the final workout, we can probably predict that Adele Floyd will be riding in the back with this colt with all the time in the world and revenge fueling them both to challenge in style at the finish. There's no questioning that this a pair that wants it and they want it badly.
Landing commented on the colt being the Belmont favorite and he practically rolled his eyes, "I hate it when people pick my horses as the favorite. It's like a jinx every time, but I will say this. Fin is ready. He's hungry and cunning enough to grind the competition down at the end. We're going into this race with eyes wide open, especially after the Kentucky Derby. No one is out of this race and we will be treating everyone as a threat come race day." So there you have it, Ultimate Revenge looks to be trying to live up to his namesake and quite literally might we add. There has been a long standing rivalry between the black bay and Saintly Touch so the Preakness defeat to the rival is only fuel to an already blazing inferno and we will be in for a stunning performance without a day come the Belmont.
Interestingly enough, Intrpid will be fighting another dirt front this weekend with the Coaching Club American. Calypso's Fury was denied her Tiara crown when Flaming Confidenza got her on a head bob in the Mother Goose, but this filly looks to be coming back for more and also has revenge on the brain. This dark bay filly is sired by none other than Furious Passion, the Star Thoroughbred owned stallion to be the second to win the coveted Triple Crown here on GHF/The Wire. Her dam is none other than Silver Tide, dam of the Admiral's Revenge son Akuma Battlecry (sire of G1 Sunset Crusade, G1 Euphoria's Warrior, G1 Lusitania's Solider, G1 War Cry, G2 Akumabuelle & others). So to say that this is a classic dirt pedigree is an understatement.
Calypso's Fury has had a quieter climb to success than most in her position. Her juvenile season was remarkably consistent, but overshadowed by her more acclaimed stablemates like Meritorious, Lissome and Lilith Wind, but having placed out of the money only once in her career isn't something to be sniffed at and she made sure we sat up and paid attention come Year Fifteen. This Furious Passion daughter came right out of the gate swinging and won three Tiara prep races poising her for the Tiara as the favorite. She claimed her win in the Acorn Stakes and was foiled in the Mother Goose by a head bob, but it anything has been proven about his filly and her family tree, it's that they always bounce back and hit even harder the next go around.
The field for the Tiara now has dwindled drastically, coming down to Calypso's nemesis Flaming Confidenza and late entry Whispering Melody from Firestone Racing. We were eager to get Landing's comments on the Coaching Club, "The field is small, but mighty and I think that this will be a similar situation, but this time Cali will have come company in the back. Flaming Confidenza got the best of Cali on her close by a head bob, but you better believe we won't be making the same mistake twice. Cali is the only G3 horse in this race, but last time out that was proven not to mean everything. We took a hit, lost the crown, but we will still be waging war and won't be making the same mistake twice. Again, we aren't going into this cocky, no one is written off and we want this too badly to play a game of ignorance."
So there you have it. It looks like Intrepid is on the warpath for redemption in both the Tiara and the Crown. The talent and work is there for both horses, but only time will tell come race day. All we can do is watch and see how this dual dark horse bid from IRS plays out. This is Michelle Roberts, reporting for The Eighth Pole Report.
