SEASIDE NEWS: THIRD EDITION
MARCH WORKOUT REPORT
It’s that time of the month: workout reports for OVS's racing stock! It has been a long few weeks as horses are getting back into the racing scene and the real work begins once again. We have a variety of racers running currently and the stock only grows bigger as new horses come in. We have current updates and workout summaries for all the horses currently racing for the stable.
Two Year Olds
Beyond the Lies This two year old fireball has been through the ringer the past couple weeks. She has yet to break her maiden, but seems to be building up to a huge win. Landing three third places, "Leah" is bound to land her first win this next race, the Magnolia Maiden at Green Horse Fields. Maverick Harris took her out for a quick breeze this morning, and had his hands full. The grey filly is notorious for being a nuisance before a race or work, but tends to settle down once she settles into her gallop. They worked a short breeze of six furlongs, hoping to keep her energy at bay until her fourth race. She ran at a rather quick pace with no other horse to challenge her. Leah came back to the barn still full of energy and fighting with her handler to let her run some more.
Southern Peach The golden filly has proven she has the heart to run and just recently broke her maiden race here at The Wire. Peaches has only run 4 races this year, but Felicity has big plans for her as the year goes on. Two year old HOTY races may be in the near future and the barn is bristling to get her going on the circuit. Kallie Sullivan took the golden girl out for a longer run at a mile, seeing her next race is still a few weeks out. "Peaches" ran the distance with ease, although it was on the turf surface, something she is relatively new at. Just recently, Peaches showed Felicity that she can also run fast paces on the grass, something that surprised everyone.
Three Year Olds
Black Magic "Houdini" is quickly becoming OVS's new project as he heads into the Triple Crown an underdog. With only three wins under his belt, the black stallion is just gearing up to show everyone what he is made of. So far his dual abilities have only been tested on the turf track, but March Week 1 he heads back out onto the dirt track with the Wood Memorial Stakes at Green Horse Fields. Owner and trainer, Felicity, is still holding back on which race event to place him in. He's already been in a Turf Triple Crown prep race, but he has shown before he is proficient over both surfaces. Which one will it come down to? Earlier this week jockey Isabelle Nottingham ran him over a distance of eight furlongs on the dirt. Houdini handled the mile really well and showed the stable he is ready to run this week against the favorites of the year: Sun King and Speak Easy.
Flaming Confidenza This girl has been living up to her name this year by landing her last win as a grade five in the Intipidio Finish Derby during February Week Two. Oceanic View has big hopes for this striking mare as the season approaches the Triple Tiara and they prepare her for the races of her life. "Denza" breezed through her easy work of six furlongs earlier this week and had a hard time stopping once she flew over the wire. Her golden coat barely showed a sign of sweat as she was led off the track, showing the filly is conditioned and ready for her next big race, the Alabama Stakes.
Summer Romance "Ro" has been running very consistent in her races and while at home. Her times over nine furlongs have never been better, but this still does not keep Felicity's worries at bay. The mare has been doing well, but not showing her spark from her two year old season. One seems to wonder if she may blossom more as she ages, like many other famous runners of the time. In the meantime, the bay mare will continue to be worked like before, and hopefully she will break loose of this dry spell soon.
Tiny Dancer Placing in the money in all three of her races as a two year old, "Dancer" cannot seem to break out of the pack quick enough to take the win. Much like stablemate Summer Romance, this bay mare is having a hard time finding her rhythm with the races. Felicity recently upped her workout program to include three or four other horses in the hopes to get her mind set in the right place during a race. They recently ran a grueling distance of ten furlongs, her max distance on the dirt. Dancer had enough time during the distance to figure out her move and breezed by the other horses a furlong from the finish line. Hopefully with careful training techniques and a new workout method, the bay mare will start to show her true colors soon.
Older Racers
Apollo Bear The oldest racehorse in the barn is by no means showing his age. After having an successful year fourteen, "Olio" is gearing up to hit his fifth, and possibly last, season hard. Plans are to get the stallion back into racing shape with under card races before putting him in HOTY levels. Many in the barn believe Olio has reached his peak and will show the racing world his spirit and style during this last season. Recent workouts have shown the stallion is in peak condition and is rather relaxed on the track. Jockey Isabelle Nottingham is positive he will start pulling out the wins within the next few races, as he is nailing all his times and only seems to be getting faster.
Beyond Perfection "Bear" is another older stallion not willing to show his true age. Winning his first start of the season, this tank of a horse is already making his mark on the track and on the other racers. On lease from Grayson Meadows, Bear has settled into his temporary home with ease and immediately took to his new jockey, Clinton Ward. Both being new to OVS, it was quite an accomplishment of the pair to win their first race together. In recent breezing exercises, the dark stallion has gotten into his habit of intimidating other horses near him on the track. He has done well stomping the competitors and racing past them the last couple furlongs to win at a huge margin. From past experiences, the team has veered away from working the two year old filly Beyond the Lies with the stallion. We do not think anyone wants to have two very high spirited horses race one-on-one so soon again after a "nipping" incident on the track.
Everyday Smile The Triple Tiara contender of year fourteen seemed to have disappeared late last year and only recently appeared at a sale. Felicity, seeing her potential immediately, jumped to bid as soon as she entered the ring. All winter break jockey Maverick Harris has been working with the mare to get her back into top shape for running once again. "Smiles" took to running again very quickly and smoothly, proving that she was not done running by all means. Felicity has increased her distances to ten furlongs, as the mare tends to prefer the longer distances over the dirt. Her times are good, but continue to get better as the year goes on.
Glory Bell The son of two very well bred horses, "Leo" mysteriously vanished for a year before being discovered by Oceanic View late in year fourteen. Determined to bring him back to the track, Felicity and rider Isabelle Nottingham worked long and hard with the stallion to get him ready for this year. So far, Leo is living up to his bloodlines and has already snatched two wins his last two races. The grey stallion is thoroughly loving his job and will do just about anything to run for his handlers. In the past weeks, he has been worked consistently over ten furlongs, increasing his stamina so he can stick to the leaders at longer distances. He has done well in training and is expected to nab a few more wins before conquering HOTY races.
Handsome Tabby The golden boy of the barn is one win away from grade one and is already showing his potential for the year. Having won two of four starts this year, the older turf runner is just beginning to settle into his routine. Felicity plans on running him primarily in HOTY runs this year, and has introduced him slowly by first working under card races. Even though he placed second in his first HOTY race of the season, everyone is amped up to see how he does in his next one. His workouts with rider Maverick Harris have become a thing around the barn as everyone glances out on their run. It is not unusual to see the stallion running a short distance of six furlongs or a longer distance of ten furlongs. Recently his works have been shortened to seven furlongs to keep his energy up but stamina long.
Majestic Hero "Jester" is finally settling into his racing career at OVS after a long and confusing year fourteen. After being tossed around several times over the course of the year, Felicity took in the bay stallion, a rival to Handsome Tabby, with the hopes to continue his 100% consistancy. After a heartbreaking fourth place in October, Felicity decided to back off on his racing until the new year. Finally, Jester is showing his brilliant stride and racing style once again and won his first race of the year. New jockey Clinton Ward loves the stallion and they get along rather well. To keep the four year old in racing condition, his breezes have been kept right around a mile, and have been adjusted to keep him on his toes over the longer distances.
