Kendall stepped into the stall, shaking off the rain drops as she moved in. The rain had been coming down for several days now, definitely promising flowers and blooming trees at the end. Kendall kept hoping for a bit of a silver lining for she could find nothing else so beneficial to this massive downpour of rain. The racehorses at Witch Creek had been moved inside the synthetic indoor barn to counteract the horribly cold rain. None of them seemed impressed by the change of scenery as most of them had only just gotten back to the outdoors after winter. The human counterparts seemed just as irritable about it these days and Kendall was happy to be away from the stable for this yearling training session.
A nicker greeted Kendall the moment she stepped into the stall. Her gray eyes lifted to meet the brown eyes of Uno Momento. The blaze faced colt's gaze flashed with happiness, his tail twitching crazily over his rump. He was such a people horse and so unlike his dam. El Sol del Mar really loved Ripley Marsh... and that was about it. Barely A Moment was where this colt got the majority of his personality, his willing attitude and his happy acceptance of humans. The colt dipped his head to sniff at her pockets, searching for treats. He was such a lush, but only because the attention had made him so. That would stop the minute this yearling camp began. Mal had said so at breakfast. If the horses were going to be champions, they had to be treated like champions.
Uno's ears pricked at the door, alerting Kendall to Malcolm's silent presence. She looped the rope halter up over the colt's ears, smiled when he dipped his head again to allow her to tie the knot. Ever the polite one, Uno followed her from the stall, only pausing to search Mal for treats. Mal stood still as a statue, staring beyond the colt and not acknowledging the attention. Uno snorted, paraded on by as though he were insulted. Kendall turned the colt back toward the stall, grinned when he stopped still as a stone and stared tat the two humans.
He was a gorgeous thing. His muscular neck meshed beautiful with well-angled withers. His back was just the right length, promising a comfortable ride. Uno was the perfect horse in Kendall's opinion. He put the other Witch Creek yearlings to shame. Kendall stepped up to the colt, fixed his forelock to glide down the center of his forehead. Uno snorted when Mal moved, jingling a pail that held a bit and bridle. Uno knew Mal was the boss. Kendall was his friend. He shifted behind Kendall to get away from Mal. Kendall would have grinned if she hadn't seen Mal's eyes darken.
The man was thinking like a horse. He set the pail on the ground, reached out with both hands and spoke in a crooning voice. "He should be fine with this bridling part. He's been halter trained for a while now. Hands don't spook him when around his face. We've played with his mouth and he's know stranger to our fingers on his tongue." Mal demonstrated this by inserting a firm but gentle finger onto the bars of the colt's mouth. Uno moved his lower jaw sideways, accepting the pressure with his usual good nature. Mal patted the colt's neck, removing his fingers and reached into the pail.
"We'll start without the noseband. He'll feel better if there isn't pressure around his nose for this." Kendall stood, tightening her grip on the lead rope as Mal approached her colt. Uno danced briefly in the backend as Mal lifted the browband up above his eyes. Once the applesauce covered bit was near his line of scent, Uno was more than willing to oblige. Mal subtly lifted the bit up and in, the head piece up and over Uno's ears. He let the leather drop, grinned briefly when Uno merely licked his lips, covering them with applesauce. "Go ahead and lead him around will you Kendall?"
Kendall took the lead rope, guided the contented colt around. He sure was an easy-going sucker. Definitely all daddy. Mommy would have bitten their heads off and chewed them to a pulp. She lead the colt back, stepped back to let Mal slip the noseband on and tighten it. Uno twitched his ears, attempted to crank open his mouth. The burly colt stamped about for several seconds, squealing in irritation. His eyes blazed. The bridle over the rope halter looked all sorts of funky, but it worked. Kendall lead him around. It was only the pressure around his mouth that irritated Uno. Not the piece of metal in his mouth.
"He's much easier than I imagine Ennie and Ares will be... Much easier." Kendall snorted at Mal as Uno went back to licking the bit, searching for applesauce. She laughed, patted the colt's neck. "He's such a goofy horse."
Mal nodded, reversed the process and then proceeded to bridle the colt again. Uno stood still even when reins were attached and pulled side to side, moving the bit in his mouth. A goofy horse, but a good one to say the least. Kendall kissed the colt's white forehead, grinning when he sighed. "Silly horse." Mal leaned against the truck, eying the girl and horse. "Why don't you pull the bridle off, take him for a walk around the track. No point in having you two sit around until tomorrow's exercise."
Kendall smiled, did as she was told and was soon enjoying a nice morning walk with the horse of her dreams.
