FT. LIKE A LIONESS, SYLVANITE & RISE ME GOLD
| WELCOME & WORKOUT
| WELCOME & WORKOUT
"She's a real looker, Sylvanite's going to get jealous." McKinney joked as he watched one of the grooms lead a bay roan filly out of her stall to which she pranced and tucked her head into her chest as though she was quite proud of herself. " I don't think Slyvia will have to worry about her, this girl loves the dirt only. I think her name is very suiting though, Like A Lioness. She's got this royal air about her, you know?" Kim mused quietly as the filly nickered loudly, tossing her head and flicking her tail before flattening her ears and trying to take a chunk out of A True Hero as he hung his head over his stall door and tried to get the filly's attention. "Oh, I don't think she fancies males much. Good thing you're riding her right?" Kim joked as she patted McKinney on the back to which he grimaced. "John's idea not mind~" She laughed as she followed the groom outside to where she volunteered to hold the filly as she was tacked up for a workout on the stable's track.
A familiar feminine whinny caught her attention and she saw that Sylvanite was all ready to go and was pulling against her groom's lead to try and get Kim's attention. "Hey Sylv, I haven't forgotten about you." She walked over to the light bay and scratched her under her chin, the filly's favorite itchy spot. A dark haired man showed up on the other side, Andy Hobbs, Sylvanite's designated jockey. "I think these girls will have it out for each other, if Sylvanite tries to fight against Like A Lioness, don't let her today. Try to keep some space between them" Unlike Like A Lioness, Sylvanite hated to run with the fillies and she would always fight with them as though she needed to prove that she was better than other fillies and would break her neck trying to stay ahead of them towards the homestretch. She would run comfortably with the boys, but it didn't work in her favor as many colts were much stronger than a filly.
Andy Hobbs gave a nod as Kim helped him mount up to where he gathered the filly's reins as she stepped forward automatically. "It's not a race today, just work their muscles and keep their mind fresh, mkay guys?" Kim mentioned as she looked over to see McKinney mounting up on Like A Lioness to which she gave a little kick. "Whoa now, hey, hey cut that crap." McKinney corrected, swatting the filly lightly on the neck to which she snorted in response. "Ralph is gonna be taking Rise Me Gold out with you guys, she needs to get her mind back on track because everyone knows she can do better than what she's doing. You two, don't let these fillies bully her as it'll only discourage her further." Both of the jockeys nodded before directing their mounts toward the tracks to where Ralph already waited with Rise Me Gold, turning the nervous filly around in a circle before all of the fillies were loaded up in the starting gates.
John Murchison, head trainer at KC Racing showed up not long before the starting gates were due to burst open. "What's today, girl's night out?" He joked to which Kim simply rolled her eyes in response. "Didn't think to bring out BB as she'll try her damndest to run these girls into the ground and Cri would just be in whatever daydream she likes to put herself in. I thought these two were focused enough to run together." John nodded in acknowledgement, "You weren't wrong." John Murchison got on the speakers and spoke to the jockeys, "Just go the ten furlongs, that should be a good halfway point between all of these fillies. Keep Sylvanite to the inside, and try to get Rise Me Gold ahead of the other two fillies before the stretch she needs that extra space to run and as for the new recruit, Like A Lioness, keep her behind the other two, I've seen her race and she likes to stalk the pack and attack towards the end." Without even waiting for a nod of acknowledgement, John shouted in the speaker in excitement "Go!" The starting gates slammed open and all of the fillies broke clean from the gate with everyone moving fast to take the positions that John had just asked for.
Sylvanite moved easily for the inside as Rise Me Gold weasled her way between the two and kept a good medium between her competition. Sylvanite wanted to fight for the lead early but Andy Hobbs kept her under control and kept that fight for the finish under wraps until it was time. Like A Lioness was striding at a easy pace behind the two fillies not even trying to fight for a lead position at the time.
The fillies thundered down the dirt field, kicking up dirt and maintaing their focus the entire time. Around the last turn, Andy Hobbs finally gave Sylvanite the free rein that she wanted so desperately and started to fight Rise Me Gold for the lead position and with a little urging Like A Lioness began to sneak up on the other fillies and came up from the outside, her legs stretching strong underneath her lean frame. "Good, good." John mused to himself as he watched the fillies from his binoculars to which Kim reached for and took a look for herself.
Sylvanite was always the filly that treated every workout like a race and wouldn't take last place as an answer so she had her game face on as always and surpassed Rise Me Gold as the homestretch came under their feet, alas Like A Lioness wasn't done yet. The bay roan filly ran hard next to Sylvanite and they crossed the 10 furlong mark at the same time with Rise Me Gold not far behind, something that she typically get the chance to do but today she was able to keep pace.
It was impossible to tell which filly had crossed the ten furlong mark so it was safe to say that it was a tie between them with Rise Me Gold being a close second. "Sylvanite is as good as gold for the Acorn Stakes, and should be able to keep up with the other classy fillies, I would have said that Like A Lioness probably would have been a contender as well from her family of Breeders' Cup winners and all, but I don't know her well personally and she still needs to adjust to being here." John mused quietly as he watched the jockeys cool their fillies down at a slow lope before taking them off the track.
Kim sat back on the bench and thought to herself. They had been training Sylvanite up, down, sideways and around to prep her for the Triple Tiara in her 3 year old season as she was a superb filly and she had the consistency to compete with the other fillies even though her pedigree didn't sound as golden as many of the other contenders. "And if she doesn't get first?" She asked, not even being able to hide the worry in her voice. John set his binoculars down on the nearby small table and threw a grin in the stable owner's direction. "Well, then we run in her in the last two legs of the tiara and try our darnest to win those. Winning any leg of the tiara or the crown is a feat within itself and win a horse wins one, but not all that typically means that the tiara and crown is out of everyone's grasp. But you know what matters the most?" John asked to which Kim, already knowing the answer, replied "We at least tried our very best." John gave a thumbs up, "Definately. While we're racing our troop of horses in the undercards mostly, we've got Muggathugga trying to ease his way into the big races into his senior year and you know I'm going to push for Like A Lioness to tackle one of the Breeders' Cup races later this year, hell maybe Sylvanite will join her there, or in the Dubai. The tiara isn't the only source of royalty in the sport of kings, and these two fillies are bound for greatness, I can see it in their eyes, don't you worry and Rise Me Gold won't be too far away. These three queens will get the recognition they deserve, just have patience." John promised before squeezing the stable owner's shoulder and heading back towards the barn to get ready to coach the jockeys on some of the classic colts.
