"We're looking to make a statement this year. Not by forcing the horses into situations they're not ready for - that's just not our style. No, we're going to do it by taking these horses that we've been able to cultivate over a couple of years now and letting them loose to do the damage that they will. This is our first year with three strong ranks to start out with - mature horses, classic horses, and juveniles. It's hard to explain how excited the atmosphere around the barn is. You'll just have to see. You'll have to see the horses run and you'll know what I mean." - Cole Mavecci, Head Trainer
The Three-Year-Olds
Aphrodite's Chant: While she was unable to make her start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies to punctuate her rockstar juvenile season, Chance was still able to accumulate four HOTY points over the course of the season. One of those wins came in December in the Sunset Crusade's Battle Stakes, proving that she has the power of recency as well as simple prowess in her division. Now going into her classic season, Chance could easily be considered one of the early forerunners for the Triple Tiara, which is her early goal at this point in the season. Having missed the Breeders' Cup due to a slight temperature before the race, Chance was given a week off of training before getting back into the swing of things. The short break has done wonders for her, and she is easily back to the form we saw late last year.
Criosphinx: Something of a dark horse, Cry was present for many of the biggest juvenile sprinter races throughout his season. However, despite multiple seconds in HOTY company, he was never able to snag that win. Rather than giving up, Cole was able to recognize that the colt simply needs more time to mature into that bigger role, and he is willing to be as patient as he needs to be to get him there. The colt has done wonders with a month off of racing, already improving on previous workout times as he prepares himself for Y16 competition. Jockey Tigris Greenfire took the colt for a three furlong work in :36 and light change in the last week of December, and the staff is very optimistic that they will see growth from him over the coming year. His last start was a 4th in the South Ocean Stakes*
Luminous Wave: Lumi is perhaps the biggest enigma of Valkyrie's three-year-old group this year. After being juggled around a bit earlier in the year, she was reclaimed by Valkyrie Stables and earned both of her HOTY wins under their colors. While she was not raced especially heavily over the course of the year, she did have a lot of success. The sprinter-miler is being tentatively aimed at the Triple Sprinter Tiara, and the daughter of Shiver Me Timbers is more than qualified for the trip. Her last start was a 3rd in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes*.
Monarch's Journey: The underachiever of the juvenile string last year, Arch nonetheless did not finish out of the money in any of his thirteen starts. He accumulated two wins, eight seconds, and three thirds, easily showing the potential there as he matures and turns some of those seconds into wins.
