HANDSOME TABBY && MAVERICK HARRIS
EVERYDAY SMILE && KALLIE SULLIVAN
Distance: 5 Furlongs
Plan: Allow horses to run relaxed for 4 furlongs before pushing the final.
Kallie glanced down the isle of the barn towards the other pair getting ready. Maverick was in the process of tacking up the big boned chestnut stallion, Handsome Tabby. She couldn't help but gaze over his muscles showing under his tight work shirt. It reminded her of the other night when she ran her hands over his broad shoulders and powerful arms. What she would give to disappear with him for a few days without all the work and stress resting on their relationship.
A cough interrupted her thoughts and she realized Mav was watching her too. She blushed and quickly went back to working on her own chestnut thoroughbred, Everyday Smile. The mare was in the process of dismantling a nearby tack box and had the handle almost torn off. Kallie swore and pushed the box out of Smile's reach, glaring at the older mare. You're a trouble maker, you know that right? As if responding, Smiles tossed her head around, jingling the cross ties. Kallie smiled and shook her head. She could not believe she was going to be riding the spirited horse in her workout. Fell must think she was progressing quickly if it meant being put on harder horses to ride. The back of her neck prickled and she glanced down the isle once again. Maverick was looking back at her, but this time he had the stallion tacked up and ready to go. She fumbled with the bridle latches as she hurried to catch up, nervous that he was watching her work. Finally she snatched her helmet and trotted down the barn, Smiles happily trailing behind.
Warm up went through without so much of a hitch. Maverick rode beside her, giving her tips on how to ride the mare and how to tweak her run to get the best results. She was hyper-aware of how close he was keeping Tabs, their legs brushing a few times. It sent shivers up her spine but she ignored them, wanting to show the boss she was ready to ride the bigger horses. After a long and relaxing warm up, they headed around the track to the starting gates. Both chestnuts were growing rowdy as they approached and it took a few minutes to get them loaded. Once inside, Maverick gave her a mischievous smile. The game was on.
The horses sprang from the gates, glad to be free of the confining spaces. After a few moments of tasseling, Tabs lurched to the front, happy to take the lead over the preceder mare. Smiles hounded after the stallion, more than eager to wear him thin before racing to the front. Just as she was told, Kallie let the mare do as she wanted for the first couple lengths. When the time was ready, she would show the crop and Smiles would get the hint.
Maverick glanced over his shoulder, checking to see where the competition was at. He knew as soon as Smiles made her move, Tabs would fight for the lead with his stored energy. They had progressed the four furlongs quickly and it was time to see who was more determined to win. In his peripherals he spotted the chestnut mare edging up. Kallie had let out some rein and was now tapping her with the crop. The mare shot forward but it was too late to catch the stallion. Tabs was charging down the track, egged on by his running partner. Kallie and Smiles were still gaining and had almost caught the two by the time the five furlong marker flashed by.
Giddy with his win, Maverick grinned at Kallie. She knew that she would never hear the end of it tonight. Yeah yeah. You win. We will get you next time though. Kallie winked at Mav, more than ready to take on the next challenge between the chestnuts.
