SILVER SERENDIPITY && DEVON BLACKTHORN
WHITE ROSE && JAMES COLLURA
WHITE ROSE && JAMES COLLURA
Once Devon handed off Coco to the groom that was waiting, it was his turn to hop on the silver bullet called Silver Serendipity. The plan was to get her to Grade One before the season ended, and she was only three wins away. She had done it before when they first got her. Demi rocketed to Grade Three as shortly after they got her, and that streak was continuing into the new season. Although last year, Demi hadn’t placed out of the money once, but that was because both racetracks were short on three year old sprint races. James stood beside Devon as his horse was brought to him. White Rose daintily made her way over to her jockey, snorting at the puddles on the ground. She was an extremely docile mare with a heart of gold, but she was having a hard time keeping up in the races. The G3 turf races are cut-throat this season, and horses like Rose who don’t have HOTY experience are suffering. After the announcement of Battlestone Downs and G3 specific races, Carter was hoping that the mare will find her spot on the track and finally get some wins under her name.
Both jockeys had mounted, as soon as they were satisfied that their stirrups and reins were all in order, they were lead out onto the soft turf. They walked their horses out towards the inside rail, before nudging the two mares into a trot when they reached it, not wasting any time in getting to their warm up. Demi let out a shrill whinny, ears perked and there was a sparkle in her eye. Devon laughed at the gray mare, loving her energetic spirit. Rose responded with her own shrill voice even though she was right beside her. James patted the mare’s neck before falling silent as they both urged their horses into a canter. They started to get into position as they travelled down the backstretch at a slow gallop. Demi had pushed her nose slightly past Rose to claim the ‘lead’ from her as they breezed past the 1/2 pole. Both riders asked for their horses to pick it up.
Demi responded happily and charged forward into the lead, leaving Rose to trail into her hoof prints. The bay mare behind her didn’t seem fazed as James let her cruise along at her own pace. They allowed Demi and Devon to go ahead of them, and James was waiting for the G2 mare to burn out on the lead. Little did he know that Demi was naturally like that, and Devon had ridden her enough times to manage her speed and excitement as they rounded the turn. Demi wasn’t really going all that fast, but her short legs made it look that way. She was easily smaller than Rose, but it meant nothing to Devon. By that time, Demi had a solid three length lead over Rose. The gray mare was just cruising along as sweat just began to appear on her neck. James glanced at Demi one last time before making the decision to ask Rose for a full out gallop.
As they entered the homestretch, James pulled out his stick and asked Rose for all she had. The mare charged forward with her nostrils flared, galloping across the turf with light yet powerful strides. Devon heard hoofbeats behind him and asked Demi for the power he knew she had. The mare flattened her ears against her head at the oncoming mare, and kicked herself into overdrive. Rose was putting loads of pressure on the gray horse, but it wasn’t enough for her. Demi swept past the wire a length and a half in front of Rose, who looked angry with herself that she didn’t start speeding up earlier. Nevertheless, Rose felt confident yet angry, and James was sure that would carry over to her next race. Demi was chomping at the bit, wanting to run more but Devon held her back and slowed her down. She felt ready to conquer her next race.
