Two Year Olds
Barely Smokin - The bay colt's racing career has certainly posed a lot of potential for the major two year old races. A third place finish in Week Two's Intipido Finish Derby has Harley prepped for the Spring Cup in two weeks. Carter has high hopes for the bay son of Barely A Moment, who galloped a solid mile on the dirt with his sidekicks, Tank and Rolo, watching closely from the rail. He looked on form, rocketing across the finish line in 1:49.00. The Dash For Cash son took it easy and was not pushed too hard in prep for his first HOTY race of Year Fifteen.
Fire Goddess - Daughter of BHoF Beyond The Limits and HoF Fleet Goddess placed a steady fourth in The Dark Sunrise Distaff during Week 2 at The Wire in her second HOTY race attempt. The chestnut filly looked keen in her workout as she preps for the Parfair Derby during Week 4. She breezed a speedy 1:00.20 in five furlongs over the dirt. Despite her size, the small filly poses to be a huge threat in the coming months, with races such as the OHIO JUVENILE STAKES*, the MAGIC MILLIONS FILLIES DIRT* and FOLLOW THE HOOFPRINTS DIRT* locked into her racing file.
Hellfire - The black filly has been taking the two year old divisions by storm, already making herself known with two wins and a 5th in her race card. Carter recently found that the daughter of Catching Fire and Blood Of The Angel worked extremely well over a shorter distance than they had thought. Flame has been rewarded a furlong extension and now is able to run the dirt 6-10 furlongs. Her workout sported her to sprint a mighty fine time of 37.40 seconds over three furlongs after a 2 furlong gallop. Flame looked to be full of energy and spirit when she worked, which sets her up nicely for the Spring Cup come two weeks.
Like A Lady - Lady could probably pass for an antelope if she wasn't on the track. The mean-spirited daughter of Sweeto Cheeto and Ebony Gold Lady was one of three turf workouts for the juvenile batch. The bay filly is done her racing for February and will be out next in March. Her workout consisted of a breeze of five furlongs, and boy did she whip through that fast. A time of 1:03.48 was clocked and recorded, only four seconds behind fellow stablemate on the dirt, Fire Goddess. She will rest for a few days before continuing on with her scheduled workouts.
Scintilla - The sleek black filly was on a roll the minute she stepped onto the track. Her first outing broke her maiden in the Stormy Night Maiden Turf, where she overtook Imitations Love by a landslide. Her workout consisted of six fast furlongs, posting a time of 1:15.05. She looked extremely wired and she should definitely benefit from that work. You can find her racing next in the Marylander Stakes week 3.
Innerstellar – A late arrival to Firestone just after Christmas, the hot-blooded son of DT Jupiter and Beltane took a little bit of a slower route to get started. On his second try, his maiden win was in a HOTY race, the Legacy Dirt Sprint series. The sprinting colt ran three furlongs in his workout, clocking in a 37.11 second blowout. The bay colt will be next seen in the New Mexico Classic Cup Juvenile*, a race not meant for sprinters but Carter has no doubt the horse could pull off an upset. He looks fired up and in shape and ready for another win.
*Note: The three year old string will be worked at Green Horse Fields*
Four Year Old Plus
Arlequinn – The five year old stallion has had a rough season so far, with one race under his belt. Airy is not yet ready to compete against the older turf sprinters in HOTY races until he proves himself, but that does not stop him from trying his hardest. The turf sprinter was breezed a solid four furlongs in 50.80 seconds, a good time for a horse of his age. Airy is showing no signs of aging, taking everything like a champ. You can find him next in the Flexuose Stakes at The Wire.
Inferno – Coming off of an injury, Fern looked in better shape than he was before. Other than slight calcium buildup in his knee and a hay belly, you could never tell he had been off for 6 months. Slowly getting back into the swing of things, Fern won his second outing; a huge feat for an injured gelding. The gray gelding was brought onto the turf and ran a decent five furlong breeze in 1:05.00. He looks better than ever, and Carter agrees that this season might be his if he continues to look this good. Find him in the Eclat Stakes next week.
Devil’s Blessing – Alongside Arlequinn, the bay colt also had a slower start to his season. Losing to newly turned three year olds was not something Carter was happy about, and this required Cian to train harder. The third turf workout of the group was his, and he was pushed through a six furlong blowout. 1:13.87 was the clocked in time, an extremely fast workout that burned his energy. “Cian toughed it out there, responding to every cue Talia asked of him,” trainer Carter Leeson stated. “He’s been with Firestone since the beginning of last year, and we really think he could be changing this season.”
Lost In Memories - The unusually coloured filly has definitely grown up under Firestone’s care. “In all honesty, I didn’t have high hopes for her when she first arrived,” Carter Leeson admitted recently. “I’m glad I put Sammie on her, she was the only one who didn’t doubt her abilities.” She quickly jumped to a grade three status, and fellow race judge CreativeCause said “I do think you have an up and comer with her!” She flew over the turf with a time of 48.80 in four furlongs. The daughter of Memorial’s Blaze x Blanchette will stick to undercard races until she proves herself even more, and then may stay for an extra season.
Ghost Rider – The unproven chestnut filly has proved Firestone wrong on many occasions. After a decent season in Year Fourteen, Gia willingly motored along at the start of this season racking up a placing in each of her three starts. The dirt-based filly was worked five furlongs and looked mighty fine doing so. Gia ran past the post in a blazing time of 1:03.60. “Gia looks stronger this season despite her slower start as a three year old. She might come off as lazy, but her workout sure seemed to prove us wrong.”
Silver Serendipity – The speedy gray filly was certainly a gift to Firestone Racing. Her racing record is next to perfect, and Demi dominated the three year old turf sprinter division last season. In preparation for the Spring Cup, Demi was run three hard furlongs, and boy did she do it well. 36.80 seconds were clocked in and recorded for the slender filly, and her fourth place finish in the Unicorn Horn Turf Sprint definitely did not do her justice, as she sprang back rather quickly from that defeat. “Demi is a one of a kind horse. She was only votes away from being Best Grade Three in Year Fourteen. If she continues to look this good and win races, well we might just have a horse to beat this year.”
Coco Cabana – The underdog son of Seattle Song x HoF Fleet Goddess has had the weirdest season out of all the Firestone racers. From coming in dead last one week, to winning a HOTY race against G1 4 year olds, to coming in dead last again, Coco sure has been inconsistent in his placings. This however doesn’t stop the bay stallion from trying. Despite losses, the router stallion is back and looking in better form than ever. His workout of a mile was run in a quick 1:45.60 and he didn’t look fazed at all. The bay horse took it like a champ and is ready to run in Week Three.
White Rose – White Rose certainly is not white and she isn’t the nearest thing close to a rose. The muscular bay mare is just getting back into the swing of things after a really light three year old season. Despite this, her nature of running really comes in handy. Her latest workout was a fun five furlongs over the frozen turf, and she posted a 1:04.16 time. “She’s a competitive one, our little Rose. She could be a late bloomer, and that’s fine with us. As long as she tries her best, we can’t help but be proud of how far she’s come after a long layoff.”
Aquatic Addiction – There’s not much to say about the grade one champion who had mysteriously dropped off the radar in the middle of year fourteen. That would certainly change this year since Theo is back and looking braver than ever. The massive bay son of Shiver Me Timbers and GS Addicted To Love is ready to hit all of the major dirt sprinter HOTY races this season, and he’s planning to do it in style. He ran a hard 36.45 seconds in three furlongs, one of the fastest times at the track so far. “Theo is certainly in top-notch form. We are really excited to own him this season. He’s already proven himself under Stride Of Perfection and Amber Black, and now it’s time for him to shine under the black and red silks of Firestone.”
Sophie’s Voice – Grade two daughter of Cryin’ Out Loud and Sophie Might was a late pick up in the Y15 Annual Sale. After running twice under Firestone silks, the chestnut mare is three wins from upping her status to Grade One. Soph has been worked alongside Theo and it has really helped her become stronger in her running style, as she ran a 36.80s three furlong blowout. “Soph’s a really quick learner. I think running her with a horse of her caliber and running distance really helps her push through as if she was in a real race. Since working with Theo, she’s really improved in keeping up with the pace and learning how to handle unideal situations.”
