Big, Energetic, and Naughty
Arion
Jessie ran his hand over the tall bay Rabicano filly that went by the name of Arion or Missy as she was known around the barn. Missy wasn’t done growing yet and everyone knew she was gonna be a big filly. They were hoping that she would be as flashy as her different color on the tack as well. Although young and scrawny, she did have her fair share of muscling, and Jessie couldn’t help but wonder where she came from. Grayson Meadows had to get blood tests done just to make sure she was a thoroughbred, and she was pure all the way through. By most standards she had beautiful conformation and Jessie was hoping that she would be great runner, one of the horses that could get his name out there.“So, how are the first impressions?” Jessie heard Alex say behind him, Andrew was next to Alex taking his helmet off. They had both just gotten done with their works on First Class and Black Zephyr.
“Big,” Jessie said, the filly had to be around 16.3 hands already, already a whole hand taller than First Class and Black Zephyr.
“She’s a lot of horse that’s for sure,” Andrew said taking a look at the filly.
Missy’s ears perked, and she tossed her head, jumping around on her feet a little, making little stutter stepping sounds with her shoes against the brick of Steve Wilson’s training barn at the Wire.
“Energetic,” Alex added.
“And naughty,” Steve said, walking out with some of the grooms, all of them covered in thin layers of dirt.
Alex and Andrew laughed, “she take off on you?” Andrew asked.
“Yeah,” Steve said grabbing the fillies reins, “Jessie, I’d pay attention, she’s always looking for a way to get herself into trouble. She likes running, and she will go very quickly, try to get her to rate a little, only let her sprint at the end.”
“Alrighty boss,” Jessie said putting his hands on the top of Missy’s back putting his leg out for a leg up onto the filly. Steve boosted him onto Missy, and the filly jumped with excitement. Her nostrils were flaring already.
Jessie adjusted his helmet and stuck the whip under his arm as he put his feet in the stirrups. At the ripe young age of 17 he hadn’t ridden much, and was an apprentice jockey currently riding the not so well known two year old Lime Light. Considered to be pretty good for his age, Jessie was hoping he could get a good solid finish on Missy so he could prove that he was meant to be there. Steve had taken a chance on letting him ride the younger filly, he didn’t want to disappoint.
“Alright, good look you guys.” Steve unclipped the lead and let Jessie begin to run the filly through her warm ups.
Arion offered a small buck before getting in the gate, sending dirt flying behind her, Jessie almost swore that she did it just to watch the dirt fall when she looked back at it.
Once the filly loaded Jessie, played with a small lock of her mane waiting for the gates to open. Once they flew open with a smack, Arion lunged forward, she shot out of the gate like a rocket. Jessie had to slow her down a little going into the first turn to get her to settle down. The filly’s ears pricked and she settled in, listening closely to every command Jessie gave her. She had a massive stride, even if she wasn’t in full flight yet, Jessie marveled at how effortless each movement of hers was. He let out a small amount of rein for her to use more of her head rounding the far turn and moving for the home stretch.
Jessie waved the whip, figuring that was all that she would need. She exploded, the acceleration nearly knocked him out of his seat. The speed was exhilarating, he’d never ridden a horse like this before. Wind whipped around them, nearly making Jessie temporarily deaf. Her stride so massive even he had a hard time believing that she was a yearling. They hit the wire at a dead sprint, Jessie had never ridden a horse like that before, and he was more than confident that the filly was going to do her very best in her next race.
