Fire Away
Call Me Crooked
Alex sat up top the newly purchased bay filly on The Wires turf track. Alex had been assigned to crook due to his experience on firey high strung horses, which was basically all he rode for Grayson Meadows. He had a way with the higher strung horses, they were still high strung, but it was toned down a little. Once he figured out how the horse ran, and worked, he was able to get them to respond to him almost immediately. This was one of the first times he had ever been to the wire, it was a change of scenery for him. Crook danced around and whinnied very loudly, watching a few of the other horses work before approaching the starting gate. She instantly sat on her heels and refused to get in. He had been warned that she had gating issues, by Steve. The filly turned sideways and sat on her heels, doing her best to not be loaded into the gate.“Come on Crook, its not that scary,” Alex murmured to her. The filly slowly and reluctantly took steps into the gate, the whites of her eyes could be seen. Alex ran a hand up and down her mane to try to calm the filly.
Crook let out another whiny and then the gates opened. She fired out rather quickly and was soon running on The Wire’s turf almost halfway down the backstretch. Her ears flicked a little at any noise, Alex took note of this, she was a filly that was very aware of her surroundings. Being a sprinter, her works were much shorter than that of any of any of his other horses he had worked a few other this morning.
Alex pushed her around the final turn, her stride was smooth and he could feel her bunch up, ready to make her move. She must have had quite the closing kick, judging by how she felt beneath him. She would need that kick.
The filly would be facing off against some of the best 2 year olds in the country (I don’t know what you guys consider your tracks to be apart of so I’m just guessing country). Stilletto Allure, Phantasm Frost, and Athena’s Desires. All top 2 year olds in their own right, really anyone could win this race. Athena’s Desires and Stilletto Allure would probably get into a speed dual, leaving Phantasm Frost and Crook to stalk the pace. Crook had a very good chance, with a fast pace to run at. Alex would have to navigate her around the track carefully, however he was told Crook was quite the attentive filly and knew her way around the track better than most of her riders.
Towards the end of the turn she fired on her own. Alex had also been told that the bay filly moved when she thought she needed to, could be good, could be bad. Depending on how the race went. Her strides lengthened as she flew down the track ferociously. Sprinting past other horses during their works, ears pricked forward, 100% focused on her work and the horses around her. The filly had a awesome turn of foot, and for her running style, it was unusual, because she would already be close to the leaders. However blowing the competition out of the water and basically making a race a payed workout was kind of nice. She flew past the wire, blowing right past another horse.
Alex patted the filly on the neck, if the filly kicked home like that on race day there was no doubt that she would be crowned the winner.
