The colt was one that had dominated in his first Year 13 start against stable companion Spectacular Motion, and three-year-old filly, Bellefire. Whilst most the other three-year-olds were going to the Unicorn Horn, they’d decided to take the risk and enter the American Derby. It was an official preparation race for the Turf Triple Crown. What path we’d take would depend on how well he performed in his three-year-old season.
Nico hadn’t raced much as a two year old and was probably the most lightly raced colt you’d ever come across. He stood at seventeen hands and two inches, and whilst he only had three wins, two places and a show, In Stride Racing were determined to wow, even though he didn’t race much as a two year old. He was a strong colt who took after his mother, Flight of Fancy.
He is a colt that is expected to do really well over the coming years, following in the footsteps of his relatives. He is a half-brother to GM Trinity, Steeplechaser Catching Fire, Grade One racer Comeuppance, and Top Admiral. He is distantly related to Bella Luna and GS Royal Crown, both of whom are kept at Witch Creek Stable, and are both very successful two year old racers themselves.
Flight Of Fancy was a mare that only got up to Grade Four, but made her mark when she sired Comeuppance. Little is known about her pedigree, but what is known is that she was amazing race horse in her time, but had to retire at the age of four due to an unexpected injury. The Immortal was a Grade One Bay Stallion sired by Matabons' Seabiscuit, making him a half-brother to GS Royal Crown. He has some great foals on the ground at the moment, Grade One FCS Stormin' Glory, General's Charge, and Fatal Attraction. He was a great sire.
Like his mother, Nico is a very intelligent colt with a lot of brains. He carries a lot of confidence within himself, and is never a colt to shy away from a challenge being the way he is. He is a truly striking creature who loves the speed, and has a passion for whatever he does. He may be new to the track and has a lot of room for improvement, but it won't take long until he's taking it under his wing and flying down the homestretch with ease. He is a fiery bold horse who won't go down no matter how hard one tries. He carries everything he needs to follow in the footsteps of the relationship and has everything within him to make a champion.
Ivana smiled and adjusted the girth and stirrups before Jacey legged her up into the saddle. The colt snorted as her butt landed in the saddle, but determined to keep going, he walked forward, ears pricked and ready to rumble. He was calm as usual pre-race, nothing would stop him from showing his true colors. They stepped out onto the turf track. It was his first workout over the turf, and with his lines it was proven that he would do good things over the surface, and may even be a serious contender for the turf triple crown.
The colt glided gently over the turf surface and round the bend before Jacey took a seat in the stands, gazing at the next pole in which the colt would start his workout. They bounced into a lovely canter along the backstretch and as they approached the seven furlong pole, she let him go. Nico felt that she had let him go and he flew forward so quickly that Ivana had to grab his mane. He powered effortlessly along the back stretch, his huge stride taking her to where she wanted to be.
His muscles worked and as he rounded the bend past the four furlong mark he had ran the half a mile in .42 seconds flat. He continued to power round the bend and Ivana began to push him as he entered the lane. Her arms stretched as far as they would go as she pushed herself to the ultimatum. The crop cracked on his rump and his stride opened up, stretching out with an insane amount of speed which brought them to the wire... Ivana relaxed and took a deep breath and let it all wash away. They were ready for this, and they weren't going down too easily.
