The thought of being reunited with her prize winning filly was one which put the biggest smile on Ivana’s face… and when that day came it was like being reunited with family. The moment they saw eachother again was like catching a glimpse of the unbreakable bond that both horse and rider had. The morning had broken and it was time for both Winnie and Ivana to be reunited as a couple for the first time in two months. She had been away training at Witch Creek Stable, and now it was time to put what she had learnt to the test.
The winter sun beamed down on the frosted surface, adding the extra glisten to the track. It looked fantastic, even in winter. Winning Touch looked likely to go to this years Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, a sprint race over seven furlongs on the dirt, the perfect distance for Winnie, though fortunately for her, there was no Paradise Island in sight since Silver Stride Stables were temporarily out of business. Instead, five of their horses had gone to Stride of Perfection, and Sierra Nevada would be rejoining In Stride in the next couple of weeks, along side newcomer Immortal Flight, who recently placed third in the Serendipity Stakes.
Winnie had ran excellently with Witch Creek, and though beaten out by her half-sister Fiery Touch in the Dubai Filly Cup, she wasn't going down without a fight today. At the moment, only one filly stood in her way for the Breeders' Cup, and that was Star Thoroughbreds filly, After Dusk. The filly was the one we beat out in the Kentucky Oaks at the start of the year, and we were determined to do it again in the sprint. She currently had 11 wins under her belt, but not in overly strong races. In her last start, she placed fourth.
Winnie had come home to us with a win in the Autumn Cup, Garnet Stakes, and the Riparian Stakes. She had a place in the Autumn Turf Stakes, a show in the El Sol Del Mar Memorial Stakes, and a fourth in the Dubai Filly Cup. She had strutted her stuff over at Green Horse Fields, and she was determined to do it again. The filly stood at just under 16.1 from when she was last measured, so rounded down to 16 hands. She would be racing against Sugar Jayde in her next start in December Week 2 at the Wire, her next start before the Breeders' Cup.
Sugar Jayde was a very strong runner, with a very strong record to back her up. She had beaten Winnie in the Turf Stakes in August, but with a bit of work we were determined to say that this time would be different. She was going to the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint, whereas we were going for the more laid back approach. This race would be preparation for both horse and rider in the next couple of weeks.
Winnie stood patiently in the stall, her ears pricked as she looked around. Jacey had already tacked the filly up for Ivana, who would be riding her tomorrow in the race. The whole idea would be to breeze her today and just let her run at her own pace. Exiting the changing rooms, Ivana picked up her hat and her crop. She fastened her body protector up a bit more to make sure she was secure. Jacey stood by the stable door, leaning on it, brushing her fingers through her soft brown hair. Walking back over to Jacey, she smiled. Jacey moved out the way of the door and she took hold of Winnie's rein and walked her forward. The filly responded effortlessly.
After mounting up, Jacey walked the filly out onto the turf track. She had a smooth and long walk stride, meaning she could cover a lot of ground with it. After she walked around for a few minutes whilst warming up, Ivana advanced to trot. The filly sprung forward into a comfy trot, and Ivana rose and fell into the saddle with each stride the filly took. Approaching the starting gate on the backside, she slowed Winnie down. Winnie pricked her ears and looked around eagerly, tossing her head.
Gating Winnie was not a problem anymore, but it was up to her jockey to walk her in, not the gate hand. Ivana dismounted and stroked the filly. She perked up but with no hesitation, she walked in. Climbing among the bars, she remounted the filly. Awaiting for the start of the five furlong breeze, Ivana crouched down. The gates opened fast and Winnie jumped out quickly. She pulled herself up with the mane and leaned forward. The filly snorted with each stride, and powered along the turf. Her strides were long and covered a lot of ground. The way she ran reminded us of her father, Touch Up.
Coming round the home turn, Ivana began to urge the filly a little bit. Being very responsive, the filly suddenly rushed forward, increasing her speed already. Entering the home stretch, the crop fell onto the filly's muscular rump. Flying for home, she urged her forward even more. In the final furlong, the filly picked up her speed even more and they flew under the wire. Relaxing, Ivana pulled the filly up and patted her warm neck. She had done a very good workout, and they were ready to take the victory in this race.
